Top 5 things you would do to a M-305

Hey all, looking to start my Norc M-305 project, and I think it would be interesting to see in what order people have gone in "tightening up" their Norkies. So, if you had to list the first 5 things you would do for mods and tweaking, let's see the lists. Also interested if the Top 5 change from year to year of manufacture, though I doubt it. Mine is a 2007.

I did this with mine:

1. Replace stock with USGI Wood
2. UTG TriRail(without side rails attached)
3. Leupold Scout 2.5X on Rail
4. Leather M1D Sniper CheekPad reproduction(just got it today)
5. I haven't done this yet, but I want to send it in to M14Doc to get the barrel chopped and the whole thing tuned up

AH, but an untinkered with rifle is a boring rifle! ;) But seriously, with iron sights, this thing shoots as good as my Garand did, with the exception of jumping the bolt on the recoil stroke. I took it completly apart and reassembled and have not been able to replicate this, but on the safe side, I am shipping it off to the Doc to have a look at.
 
1. Make sure handguard floats;
2. replace oprod spring guide with aftermarket
3. bed stock
4. unitize gas system
5. try a variety of ammo (or start reloading and develope loads).
 
1) Break the welds on the flash hider so you can remove and service the gas system at will.
2) Index the barrel.
3) NM type Op rod spring guide.
4) For iron sight shooters, USGI rear sight, and for scope shooters, a GOOd mount (SEI, ARMS, Sadlak)
5) Replace all springs with USGI, especially if using a scope mount (i.e. the bolt springs)

Or, you can go all out and do something like this:

USGI glass or after market stock with a good glass job
Shim the gas action or ensure it is tight to lock up when aligned
Inspect the rear sight for looseness and repair/replace as necessary
Inspect crown, cut/recondition as necessary
Replace Op-Rod guide with aftermarket one piece cylindrical
 
Here's basically the first 5 things I did to mine:

1-Got a good scope mount (went with ARMS 18) and decent scope

2-Shimmed gas system at one of Hungry's clinics

3-Had spot welds broke on the flash hider at the clinic and got a flash hider with a bayonet lug (thanks Hungry ;) )

4-Replaced chu wood stock with USGI stock (decided on a USGI birch stock)

5-Replaced op rod guide (went with Sadlak) and the op rod spring with one for an M1A, since it wouldn't work with the Norinco one


Other than that, I've also given it the Sadlak tactical mag release latch, the QD sling mount, and a Harris bipod. I still need to get around to bedding it, maybe getting an M1 Garand rear sight, and having some other superficial tweaks done to it, but as it stands right now, she's almost where I want her.

Semi-auto is restricted to 5rnds, so there's the 5 things I'd do right there. What else do you expect from your M-305?

Nice job, out taste in battle rifles is similar especially regarding the stock.
 
1. Temporarily remove flash hider
2. Unitize gas system
3. shim gas system
4. bed into USGI fiberglass stock
5. Had a gunsmith smooth the trigger

I did each of those before adding a scope mount.
The five things performed did make a difference. The repeatable accuracy is outstanding.
My M14S is incredibly accurate and dependable.
Oh, all the M305?M14S nay sayers know where dinner hangs. Too often a guy asks a question about improving a particular firearm, and the thread is quickly populated with the usual ***** knocking it.
 
1. De-cosmo everything
2. Shim the gas system
3. Replace op-rod spring guide with Rauch Tactical one
4. Do trigger job
5. Replace chu-wood stock (if applicable)
