Here goes another poll. It was interesting to see that the Ruffed Grouse was the voted the "Top Grouse" by a huge margin. Now how about big game animals in Canada. I think I may have an idea of which species will take top honours, but lets give it a go.
Please lists some reasons. One thing I think should be included is the desireabilty of hunting/harvesting the species and its "Canadian-ness". For example, Caribou is a staple in the north, and I would say it is very "Canadian".

Can not believe I forgot Mountain Goat!!

You also forgot Polar Bear!!

I was thinking of Polar bear, Pronghorn and Muskox, but thought that they are so limited in range and hunting opportunities that they weren't really in the hunt, so to say.

Moose is King. Just two more Saturdays and its opening day! I really should be in bed right now, cause duck/goose season opens in a few hours....but just too psyched up right now! Weather is supposed to be crap though...darn Hurricane Ophelia!

While I have only actively hunted for grizzly once, since I have never been awarded a LEH tag, I would say htat hunitng grizzly, in close cover, has got to be pretty close to tops.

High country mule deer (and I suppose sheep, too) :D puts you into awesome country.

But there is nothign like the pucker factor you get when sneaking through thick coastal cover, up a spawning stream, and seeing (fresh) grizz sign everywhere, and when yhou can only see about 40 yards in any direction...

Moose is probbaly the "total" Canadian game animal, since it is in almost every part of Canada.

Foxer: i'd say every hunter has a different definition of what the best hunt would be. Some prefer the thrills of hunting dangerous game, other, chasing a hard to catch animal. So go with what YOU feel is the nicest animal to hunt.

I voted grizzly. This is a real hunt. The animal has as many chances against you as you do against him. The Grizzly is the king of the North American forests. And some day soon, im gonna kill the king

This summer, along the Alaska Highway, I saw wild bison for the first time. The herd bull was so big he stepped over the concrete highway divider without breaking stride. Until that moment the top North American trophy I've lusted over was a coastal grizzly, but Yogi has been usurped.

When I read the topic I figured it reffered to the big game animal that has the most success rate and I would think that there are more white tail tags sold and filled in Canada than any of the other game animals listed.

How are you defining 'top big game animal'? Funnest hunt? Most thrilling? Hardest? Most hunted?
X2

I would say the most hunted big game animal by the most hunters would be the Whitetail Deer. That fact alone makes it the most popular big game animal by far...
I have heard many firearms industry experts say that Whitetail hunting is more important to the economy of North America than all other forms of Hunting....Turkey Hunting is a distant second... 8)
If your just talking numbers and popularity... Whitetail Deer is #1...no contest

It is subjective. If you think economic importance should play a big role then White Tail is up there. If you think exclusivity is important the maybe Stone Sheep or Bison.

I kind of think like TheCanuck, which is also why I asked for reasons.

Obviously this is not scientific, its just to have fun and see what fellow members think.
