I know someone who killed an elk at 2000 yards they said I bet you can't hit it he said I know I can hit I just don't want to walk all they way there and all the way back (he was a retired military sniper) He hit it and dropped it on the spot since his buddy said he would walk with him he laughed and said no I'm not walking that. He nearly killed his buddy when he got back..

Gotta stick my nose into this, ...............This is good shooting, but it is not hunting. It is spotting shooting, not spotting and pursuing, ...two different skills. Unfortunately this is on tv for all to see and form anit-hunting positions!!

Agree with this. This video is more about "My boy the Super Hero" than about doing everything possible so an animal dosen't suffer needlessly.
Unfortunately the boy will grow up with an inflated ego (a big part of the problem with today's youth) and the attitude that anything within a mile is fair game no matter how many shots it takes.
Time to lock up this thread. Agree it is done. OP has lose 100% of it.

I think that almost everyone who promotes extreme long range shooting of live big game animals is selling something.
They are selling their "superior" technical shooting skills, or their "superior" products, or their "superior" cool factor, whatever. It's all about industrial technology and instant gratification. And its all about them. Not about the animal hunted, or any level of connection to the game, its environment, or the achievement required to really deserve taking the life that animal. They focus on the technical and sadly removed level of "what I see I can kill".
How powerful. And how pathetic.
Hunting, done well, teaches far more deep values than the marketers and wannabe technical shooters can even imagine. It is about being truly connected to the quarry during a respectful and grateful pursuit in which there is no shame in taking a life when it is done respectfully and well.
That's what ethics are all about, and the "me" generation just doesn't get it. Ethics are the values that make us human, and form the basis of values that make human life worth living. Sadly, too few of the posters on sites like this even consider ethics worth discussing in an open minded manner, they are too busy being self serving technophiles.
Laws are a poor guide to behaviour, in everyday life and in hunting. The important stuff is way more than just laws.
I prefer to promote hunting that requires a high degree of understanding of the game, empathy for and awe of the animal hunted, responsibility and gratitude for the life taken, and commitment to the full utilization of the animal after its death. Beyond fair chase, beyond simple "harvest" and beyond technical killing is where the true value of hunting is found.
