Years ago I used to see tracers for sale mostly at gun shows but lately I haven't seen any and I was wondering if this was a legal thing or just a avalibility thing?

Police state does not trust its citizens with this stuff. Says they start fires and explode or glow on impact. Disturbing and nasty compounds are used in them and so big brother has taken precautions for our safety and made them unobtanium in order to prevent something bad happening in the future.??? Remember its for your safety

Tracers are still around and for sale. Just not like they use to be many years ago. NRCAN is not allowing any new tracer into the Country AFAIK so the availability is slowly going down. The legal aspect has been debated here quite a bit.

They seem to be illegal if you read the explosives act as they are defined as a incendiary. I myself am not sure of the legal status and have not seen any effort by LEO's or any Gov. Agency to confiscate and charge anyone caught with or trying to sell tracers. If they are illegal they are way down on the list.

I tend to agree, there are way too many dumba$$es out there that, can get their hands on these and not be responsible and burn down something, and make the whole gun community look bad. I don't think it's worth the risk having these rounds around for use.

I have quite a few in 5 different calibres, I don't shoot them much as I try and preserve them, also have a lot of tracer projectiles but I need to find the proper load first, I wish they made sample packs of powder so I could experiment and not break the bank,

They turn up every now and then. I purposely tried to start some dry grass on fire on my land in a safe area and it just would not happen. Even adding extra distance to be sure of full ignition.they were banned from import by the fun police no safety reasons. Man I love tracers!

.....and with people who think like yourself the world will always be safe ,ever think of running for office?

Anyone who was in the army can attest to the fact tracers can and do start fires. I can't count the amount of times cease fires were called and everyone piled into a 2 1/2 ton with shovels and water packs. Ahh.... Fun times

ok well i guess have not fired enough of them to see the resaults. i will be more careul i suppose

i seen some up here for sale not too long ago, i have about 1100 rounds left in 7.62x39, (1 seeled spam can/720rounds + 30cal ammo can i filled up/~400) i have only been shooting them during winter, but since they dont seem to come up for sale as often i have been just saving them.
they sure are fun to shoot though:D

big issues with fire and ricochets. if anyone disputes this see the MG fire at night time, the traces hit berm and go skyward, its just how they react, im not sure if its how they are built or the actual incendiary that causes it.

As the trace compound burns off, the bullet gets lighter and is more prone to ricochet the farther out it goes.

Christ. And I was planning to stay out of this one.

Legal aspect:

Tracer rounds: legal (frowned apon, and genraly not aproved for use at most ranges)
WRONG. Unlawful under the Explosives Regulations (or did you think the Firearms Act was the only legislation that affected this sport?). Readers Digest version:

Criminal Code and Explosives Act prohibit you from possessing ANY explosive, PERIOD, unless exceptions are made.
Explosives Regulations define "safety cartridge" as ammunition with inert bullets and SPECIFICALLY excludes tracer ammo.
Explosives Regulations makes an exception for you to possess only "safety cartridges".

Since you can only possess safety cartridges and a tracer isn't a safety cartridge, you can't possess it. That is DIRECT from a Senior Inspector of Explosives that I met face to face in Ottawa at the Explosives Regulatory Division headquarters. Despite that you'll still get the ostriches here that pretend it isn't true and argue till they're blue in the face. Doesn't change what the law says. Look it up yourself, it's available online.

Will the RCMP kick in your door over having tracer ammo? Not likely. But people should be PROPERLY informed so they can make their own decisions about this.

Dont be shy, AK. It would feel right without you! :) (I jest, of course..)

Edit. Oops, meant to say It wouldn't feel right without you!
