Tragic news from Kamloops

He was a very experienced shooter and a wonderful person. We first met in the early 1990's and bonded over a shared appreciation of Corvettes and later motorcycles(along with both being members of the same fraternity). We lost touch towards the late 90's/early 2000's then reconnected when I joined the PoCo range in the mid-2000's. He was the one who got me interested in IPSC and was my black badge instructor. I can say first hand that from what I saw he was very focused on safety and definitely not someone to push the limits. Over the years, he would always tell us to never push past 90% so as not to risk going beyond our comfort/capability. We became quite close and earlier this year I did my re-cert with him after being dormant for a while. My wife and I were lucky enough to be invited to his 50'th birthday party this past April and sadly, that was the last time I saw him:-( This is an incredible loss for the community and an unbelievable loss for his lovely wife. Just unbelievable.

And, I want to say that if this could happen to him, it could happen to any of us. He wasn't a yahoo: He was a smart, safe, competent shooter with 20 years of IPSC under his belt.

^No doubt.
Inherent risks in everything we do from crossing the street to making toast...

Condolences to the family, friends and all involved.

Thanks for sharing this.

So sad indeed. Can't imagine what his wife and family are going through; leaves the house for a fun day and never returns. no chance to say goodbye.
Must have been terrible for those that were there too.
RIP young man.

That sucks to hear about. Condolences to the family and friends. I've only been to a couple IPSC shoots over the last few years, but it's always seemed like a massive emphasis on safety, even with the really competitive shooters. Accidents can happen with any hobby or sport though.

A very sad turn of events my condolences to the family, friends, and IPSC shooters. I never had a chance to meet him as I am a new IPSC member but it is a great community with very supportive people.

Please!!! This is NOT the time or place for anyone to be armchair experts on an event you did not attend, witness or even if you were there, have the respect to keep your opinions to yourself. If you've got opinions on overall CoF issues from unrelated previous first hand events then contact the BoD's of the shooting discipline you were participating in to discuss any issues. This is a condolences thread meant to acknowledge the tragic event not to debate what occurred. As an aside, I spent many years as a Casualty and Litigation Claims Manager and Investigator handling MANY significant liability Claims and I can tell you that I for one am NOT about to profess to be in a position to determine or conjecture what happened, or why it happened as it is NOT my place to do so, and nor does ANYONE possess all of the facts here. So quit the armchair stuff that unfortunately invades this board at times. I respectfully implore all to not feel compelled to provide any opinions. There is NO need to reply to my post to defend a counter position as it would be disrespectful to do so in this thread. I'd happily receive a private PM if someone feels the need to do so....

Back to the thread: with this individual, I went through the IPSC Range Officer course in early 2000's, Black Badge TCI and was on the Port Coquitlam Hunting and Fishing Club BoD's with this Gentleman for a number of years. Yes, he was very much a Gentleman and a very safe competititor and gave back to the sport in spades and he was indeed a fun guy to be around. He never talked badly about others and always willing to go above and beyond to help out new competitors and old alike. He will be missed by many in so many ways.
