Quick question,
The Ontario hunting regs say I have to leave the tag/wing on a bird until it is prepared for consumption. Well if I just breast out the turkey in the field, can I just transport the meat and leave the carcass out in the bush? Last year when I got my first turkey I ended up taking the entire thing home, but had planned to just breast it out this year (if I'm lucky enough to fill a tag) and take the meat home. I would think that qualifies as being prepared for consumption so don't have to leave a wing/leg attached to verfiy what species the meat is from, but thought I'd ask?

Thanks.

You WILL be charged for wasting leg meat as said by daveg01.Tag it,bring it home and clean it the way you want AT home and no probs then but why waste the legs ?.Someone will eat them if not you !!!.Make a stirfry out of them, just don't waste them !!!!.

Take the whole thing home, intact.Thats what the regs are saying, technically.
Practically, take the whole thing home :)
As others have said, those legs are excellent. Put them in the crock pot for the day, chill them overnight, the meat strips off minus the tendons. Run it through a processor or grinder and you have great makings for chili or soup.

Thanks for the tips!! I had issues with the legs last year, just didn't turn out very well so will try the crock pot and then chill overnight before trying to seperate the meat.

Bring it all home. I quit goose hunting because I was not happy cleaning them and even less happy eating them. Wasting any of the meat is not acceptable or legal. I loved hunting geese but the preparation and consumption made killing the birds more than it was worth to me. I hope to try a Turkey hunt some day.

Goose is pretty easy if you don't keep the skin. Gut them, skin them, use the breasts for goose jerky and put the rest in a crock pot for soup. I don't like the dryness of wild goose and duck, so this cures the problem for me.

Dark meat is why we go hunting.

Never made sense to throw out those beautiful and tasty legs and wings.

You wouldnt do it on a chicken... so why would anyone throw out the limbs of a prized wild turkey:confused:

Yeah I never got the idea of just taking the breast out of them and leaving the rest. I save it all and with the tough meat like the legs my mom makes a killer soup with them. Kind of a waste to throw them legs out don't ya think ??

Turkey hunting is the one thing I'm truly envious about in hunting with you Easterners. Lucky buggers.

In my area we are overun, they are everywhere. I am going out on a turkey hunt on monday. Im not hunting turkey but coyote as I dont have my stinking T permit yet.

I'd trade you a spring bear for a turkey in a heartbeat.

Well so far my big game hunting days arent going to well. When I went out the other day for coyote all I found was a large Beaver giving me cutting eyes from under a log. As I wasnt sure how to cook it and having already eaten Beaver the night before I let it live this time:p.

I got a thing you squeeze today that makes dying animal noises so hopefully that helps with the Coyote. I went to a few places but I think the days of finding factory 6mm are official over around here. It was scarce for years but seems to be gone now.

My friends Dad who has a tree farm near where we hunt has been attacked by aggresive turkeys on a few occasions. They charge right at you apparently :p. He has kicked a few in the head and said he smashed one with a shovel. :p

I still havent eaten wild turkey yet but I hear its pretty good. It seems that now everybody knows Im a #### hunter they keep giving me free meat. I scored awhole pile of venison from my buddy the other day. So at this rate I guess it doesnt matter if I dont shoot anything.

I thought you guys had a small turkey population in the valley areas of BC? Or is that just way to far to go?
