transporting restricted rifles

whats up guys just a quick question i got a couple hard gun cases that iv been useing to transport but i was wondering do any of you guys use soft gun cases for your restricteds with locks on the zipper? is it legal? i remeber when i took my pal course he said cant be easily broken into anybody ever have any problems ? im looking to switch over to try and keep things a little more organized with the extra pouches on the sides. any input or a link if this has been covered would be great.

By the RCMP page, you require;

Restricted and prohibited firearms

Unload the firearms; and
Attach secure locking devices to the firearms; and
Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container

So by that definition I'd say no, because a soft case could be argued as "not sturdy".

I myself have a few hard cases specifically for my restricted firearms.
 
Transportation of Restricted Firearms
11 An individual may transport a restricted firearm only if

(a) it is unloaded;

(b) it is rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device;

(c) it is in a locked container that is made of an opaque material and is of such strength, construction and nature that it cannot readily be broken open or into or accidentally opened during transportation; and

(d) if it is in a container described in paragraph (c) that is in an unattended vehicle,

(i) when the vehicle is equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the container is in that trunk or compartment and the trunk or compartment is securely locked, and

(ii) when the vehicle is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the vehicle, or the part of the vehicle that contains the container, is securely locked and the container is not visible from outside the vehicle.

There's the law, the problem is the interpretation of "such strength, construction and nature that it can't be readily broken open."
 
I trigger lock mine, lock them in a hard case, inside a hard case, locked inside another hard case, wrapped in chains, locked inside my trunk and the trunk is pad locked shut. The ammo is transported in a totally different vehicle which my wife drives to the range AFTER I have arrived there and give her the all clear text that she can safely leave the house and make her way to the range. You can never be to safe because I hear these weapons can have a mind of their own and may go on shooting spree's if they are not locked extremely well at all times. If they have a stock that goes up and a high capacity clip you have to be even more cautious. My comment was not meant to make fun of your honest question, but to comment on our extremely STUPID firearms laws in Canuckastan.

I use my PSA case that came with my 9mm AR and lock the zipper. Its very durable and isn't easily broken into especially when I am in the vehicle with it at all times which means you have to also pry it out of my cold clamy hands

This crap always makes me laugh because guys bring their cases to the range and forget their keys and I just pop the hinges with a screw driver or open one clasp and pull them out through a slot in the case then use a screw driver to pop the trigger locks off which take about 2 seconds if that. these "locks" are the easiest ones to pick that I have ever done.
 
Good thing I just sold my last restricted rifle today.... I used locking drag bags for the last couple years.... lucky my ##### didnt fall off...or worse.
 
I use a double rifle / double pistol soft case exclusively. With padded shoulder straps, room for 4 guns, pouches for mags, tools and paperwork it's convenient, simple and certainly no easier to break into than those cheap Plano rifle cases...Ive also been known to stop for gas, coffee or ammo on the way to the range though so maybe you're better off not taking my advice...

thats exactly what i was looking to get, i have the higher end all weather plano case and it serves its purpose but as for keeping someone out of it over a soft case i think there pretty equal i do like that the plano has built in locks so i dont have to bother with pad locks but again there not gonna stop a screw driver .i think it would come down to a cops view on it if anybody got pulled over
 
There is case law out there (not zipper bags but it was a case where someone did break into the container) and the judge in that case ruled that if a person had to use a tool, the it was "not easy" but if it could be done without a tool, ie: with your hands, then it was "easily" The judge gave a specific example that if it required a knife or a screwdriver or pliers, then it wasn't easy.
 
"Such strength, construction" must be such that it can't be readily broken into or broken open during transport. If a tool like a pen or circular saw is required to break into a case, then it can't be "readily" broken open or into during transpiration, IMO. As long as the case has a strong zipper, I don't see it being a problem.
 
A good quality soft case is more secure than a lot of the cheap clam shell cases I see guys using at the range. One good drop on the corner would split the case in half.
