Tree stand thieves

Would a stand be likely stolen or damaged if there was no way to it? Say you used a set of spurs to climb and set the stand up some 30-40 ft off the ground?
Or would people still find a way?

30-40 feet!!! Holy Hell...I've been 20-22 feet with a climber and that was extreme. Couldn't imagine going up 40 feet.

We like to strap a 50lb weight on the last rung before the takedown points.. If your going to steal it you at least going to lose a couple chiclets

I've had a stand stolen off my land, it was cable locked to the tree, I found pieces of cable lock at the base of the tree. Also had people steel the SD cards out of my trail camera (I screw the cameras to the trees so they're not exactly easy to steel).

Around the farm I find tree stands regularly.
I leave a note saying I took them down and where they can come and get them back, in 15 years I have only had two people come asking for them back.

Fair enough on private property. That is a good way to go about it, does not ruffle any feathers.

The only way to insure it isn't stolen is to take it down when you leave and put it back up when you return....If it's on crown land youre kind of claiming the hunting spot belongs to you by leaving it up. That's an unfounded claim. I personally wouldn't remove a stand that I found but I wouldn't have any problem using it either.
If its on private property then its a completly different story!

Agreed 100%!!!

It a long way down without one..

yes, it is. i fell about 16 ft off a roof in 2008 and only had a buggered up ankle/crutches for 3 weeks. someone was watching over me for sure. am now much more safety conscious. ALWAYS USE FALL PROTECTION.

I know of one landowner who has 5 Fully enclosed 8'x8' Tree stands. He carries ladders to each on a boat trailer just prior to each Hunting season. Jim

I never touch store bought tree stands but I've used "built" pre existing tree stands that looked abandoned. Not sure what the etiquette is on that. The way I read the Manitoba hunting guide now you're not supposed to leave stand overnight on crown land and you have to have your address on it so people know where they can come rob you of your guns.

then again I'm probably reading the guide wrong.

Never had a tree stand stolen, but four years ago I had my first Doghouse ground blind stolen, and it was right off of my buddy's private property. When it's all said and done, it was only worth $100, but it's still the principle. So I spent another hundred on a replacement Doghouse. Just for that reason alone, I don't think I'll be buying one of the Gucci $300+ blinds.

In alberta, if you use that tree stand, remove it, or otherwise tamper with it or the area you have broken the law. You are disrupting another person set and interfering in someones legal hunt; both are crimes under the alberta wildlife act.

(3) A person shall not disturb another person who is engaged in the
lawful hunting of wildlife, or in any lawful activity preparatory to
such hunting, with the intention of dissuading that person from
hunting or otherwise preventing the hunting or of preventing that
person’s enjoyment of the outdoors.

ive never lost a stand, i know a guy who got pissed off cause his stand was on crown land and he went to get it, it was gone, my ladder stands are home made, 1' square tubing, 10' ladder with another 4'ontop with a base, ive used 10' spikes into the trees, if they can get them down i commend them, but id still be pissed off, i would never buy a stand, on the other hand ive had guys come into property where i was hunting, sitting directly across the field from me, when confronted he said "well ive got a 99 year lease" yeah ok buddy so i asked him very nicely to leave, this guy had a few screws loose so i was nice, my buddies property its like a bloody race track, i like to sit there even if im not hunting to just piss them off! its bad because it makes every "by the book" hunter look bad! then we get banned from prime hunting land

3-1/2 hours from the nearest town, at the end of a 115 km abandoned logging road I left my camper for the day to bring moose home, when I returned that same day, someone had been there and totally stripped the hitch, equalizer brackets, propane tanks and all fittings/hoses, tail lights, battery box and wiring, and a few other things not inside. This is one example of the many many times I have had property stolen from me. In the last year I have had theft twice at my home property, and I live rurally on a dead end gravel road.

The only time things don't get stolen while hunting is when hunting by horseback or plane hundreds of miles from where people can access my camp. I have very little faith in the human race anymore.

Yeah but does your trailer look like it's been abandoned for years? :D :D :D

It's not stealing then it's Salvage.

Errr Wrong!!!
That person believing he can claim a hunting spot on Crown land by leaving his unattended gear is breaking the law by interferring with my lawful hunt and preventing others from hunting, and preventing others enjoyment of the outdoors.
If he is in the tree stand and hunting then my interference would be illegal!

It's attitudes like this that destroy a mans faith in the the goodwill and trust of others. Using a salvage law as protection against theft is immoral and disgusting.

And no, my stuff is well kept, used only hours before, and other than a quick trip home to save meat, is never left in the bush. It was extremely obvious someone was staying there the night before, and the night approaching.
