Tree stands

This is what I went with.

I didn't know you were religious Joe, What the hell is holdin' that thing up? Prayer?:D

I have a bunch of them and might have a heck of a deal on one for you, if you come on down here to pick it up. Heck I will even buy you lunch.

I have wayyyyyyyy too many thoughts about tree stands to put down here since I am a two finger typist. But I have spent many hundreds of hours of my life in portable, and not-so-portable, and permanent tree stands, and I just might be the encyclopedia of wisdom you need (since we are of similar ages and physiognomies...)

got your pm, JYC, and replied.

Joe that is a great looking ladder stand. When John Y comes down to vist we will discuss your choice of "everything."

Doug

Joe, the only thing I would do with that stand is add a pair of braces back to the tree under the platform. All of our "permanent" stands have those braces, and they are a cheap investment.

How high is that one? About 16 feet?

Doug

16'?

2 2X6X12 so a total of 24' to the stand floor. What can I say!

Heck I can see 300 yds into the neighbors lot as well as my own.

Here's a view from up in the stand, we call it the nosebleeder. I actually gave that stand to one of the older guys in the camp this year cause it was getting to much for him to hunt the back of the lot so I gave him this one which is a 15 minute walk from the camp. I got my 8 pointer and doe out of his old stand in the back and he didn't get anything out of this one, I felt bad, Bwahahahaha!!!!

Oh ya, we did brace the stand better, that pic was taken in the spring before the roof and braces were finished.

Whew! 24 feet would be a beggar for bow-hunting. Your angle would be so steep that the vitals would be a golf-ball sized target!

Nice looking country there, Joe, and one of these years I am going to get up there for a hunt!

Anytime Doug, we had one of our best years ever this year. Rifle season is only open for 7 days and we hung 5 bucks and 2 does. Broke the game pole in half. Let one buck tag burn.

One comment on the deer stands that you guys use for rifle hunting I have is that (IMO) you are WAY too exposed on a lot of them. (the ground stands)
If we can work on building up blinds on the ground, and adding some tree stands, I think your success rate will go up tremendously.

whats good for you to volunteer your time to help set up;)..
how about may, before the skittos get out?

VERY good point, JYC. The longer a permanent stand is in location prior to it being used, the better.

The downside is that no matter how stealthy you are, the older deer will eventually bust the stand and you will not see mature bucks and does from it. :( Best way to ambush an old buck is to hang a portable the day before you plan to hunt it, with serious attention to noise and scent when you are hanging it, and get in to the stand as quietly and as scent-free as you can on the day you hunt from that stand. More work, but the pay-off can be very good.

I have watched big deer across a field approach one of our permanent stands, stop way out of bow range and watch the stand intently for any sign of movement, and only go on once they are certain that there is nobody in the stand! ;) And the monster bucks pretty well always loop downwind of the stand before coming in to a bait pile or whatever - I was busted several times by big bruisers this way.
