Tried again to get an ATT

Tried again today to get an ATT and got denied. I was hoping that I could get another person on the phone that may be willing to issue one. I told the person that I wanted an ATT to take my firearm from my residence to the Orillia Gun Club. They asked if I had a letter from an executive inviting me to the range and I said I am a member and gave my member number. That wasn't good enough. Somebody from the club has to request the ATT for me. Is this standard procedure all over Ontario? I then asked if I could get just a one time ATT and was denied. So I got a little angry and asked them what would happen if I wanted to take my gun to a gunsmith. They said they could issue a ONE-TIME-ONLY ATT for that purpose.

This is so darn frustrating. I can't get a hold of the one person that can look after applying for the ATT and even when I do it can take up to 5 weeks to get the documents.

Something has to be done about this. I looked into Unauthorized Transport of a Restricted firearm and you can get up to 2 years in jail plus a mandatory firearms prohib.

I just wanna shoot. I really don't understand the reasoning behind needing an ATT. If the regulations for safe transport of a firearm are followed an ATT shouldn't be required. A gun is a gun whether it be a rifle, shotgun or handgun.

I think that the government should have a license endorsement specifically for Transport. so for example a PAL could contain Possession, Acquisition and Transport and perhaps even Carry. That means you could have a single card to show that you can lawfully own, aquire, transport and carry a firearm. It would save us and the government time and money.

Ok, I think my rant is done.

thanks for reading

In Ontario, the club sends in the ATT applications. You are going to have to work this out with your club. Does the club require you to take a range safety course before they will recommend that an ATT be issued? If it does, have taken the course? Do you have the ATT application form? Get a copy, fill it out, take it to the club officer who submits the applications.

Welcome to Ontario. All long term ATT's have to come from the club. It's the Ontario CFO's interpretation of the Firearms Act. As to the laws making sense, don't even bother thinking about it. It'll keep you up nights, give you heartburn and it still won't make sense.

yes the current gunlaws are stupid and less then worthless

and we all know your CFO and club executives have cooked up another level of control that is not needed.

but this stupidity is going to come to an end, we just need a Conservative majority followed by some common sense laws. It will happen

Normally in ontario your club secretary will send in the applications for the club members.. Now sometimes you need to have past your probabtion or a course at the club, sometimes there is nothing you just need to fill out the purple form and give it to the club secretary and they send it in... Sometimes they come back in a week and sometimes it's months...

The politicians and bureaucrats get this nice fuzzy feeling of omnipotence (impotence???) and contol over their "subjects" by issuing a piece of paper that regulates peoples lives.

These POS's don't really care about anyone, their only job is to get re-elected.

Welcome to Morontario.

You are just going to have to toe the party line, go through your club's safety course and probation, get the forms and wait, and wait, and wait for the "privilidge" of being a law abiding firearm owner.

Just take 2 minutes every day, Monday to Friday, calling your local CFO that you need a 1-day temp ATT to take each and every one of your guns to your gunsmith because you're afraid the barrels will cause a combustion.

Go ahead and try it. They simply can't stop you.

Excuse me while I go look for my til foil hat now.

Man, that's the major reason I never considered going for a restricted PAL so far - I grew up in a family where pistols/revolvers were as much part of the sport as long guns and developed an even greater affinity during my Army days.

However, post migration to Canada (read good old Ontario)......I see that so much of a hassle to own one for the purpose of sports  Although I am always on the brink of temptation to add restricted to my PAL :D My support is for those who are having to put up with the all bureaucratic #### to pursue the sport.

^ get it while you can...no one knows what the future might bring. Not to be negative but think about the whole 12x thing.

Don't dispute the foresight......should be the way to go. Although I can't imagine a firearm sitting in a safe only to be fondled with (thinking 12X here)......I think back about the times in a not too distant past when my brother and I carried an Artillery Luger in addition to .22 Hornet rifles for barking deer :)

It's a pity that I was only able to resume the hobby and subsequently come across the Gunnutz site only as recently as 3 years ago otherwise that may have greatly influenced a decision to pull up stakes and settle in some of the more hunter friendly provinces out west :) I do realize one can't carry a handgun other than to the range anywhere in the country today for that matter.

contact your MP about this. This is not how the law was written. No where does it mention that that clubs are supposed to have sweet f all to do with your ATT's.

^Its an Ontario thing. No membership, no ATT. Club secretary must apply for your permits. I bet you will find that alot of the clubs feel empowered now, as at thier whim the CFO can be contacted and your ATT can be made invalid. I know at my club I was informed that if a membership ever lapses that they would immediately call the police and inform them I no longer had a valid permit.

Dont you know that the Socialist sleep better at night knowing that you are in possesion of what looks like a piece of #### done up on your home printer that allows you to drive to the range?

Why are you wasting the CFOs time. They already expained to you the ATT process in Ontario and yet you call back, expecting someone else to give in to your request again. Tying up an extremely busy staff by asking the same questions again and again, when you've already been advised to contact your club secratary about "club issued ATT".

As a Customer Service rep, people like you realy burn my ass, by tying up busy people by asking the same questions you ALREADY have the answers to, hoping that our answer will change

No wonder it takes so much time for me to get a short term ATT, if the CFO staff has to waste time in dealing with impatient individuals wanting to by-pass an already overloaded & understaffed system. CONTACT YOUR CLUB AND GO THROUGH THE PROCESS LIKE EVERY OTHER ONTARIO GUN OWNER!

When I retire it's back to Gods Country and yes I hate dealing with the CFO also! It's a very stupid system, but we have to deal with the Nazi Liberal in Ontario

A few short years back while I was waiting for my ATT from the club to arrive, I called the CFO and requested a temp ATT to go to the range. No problem, CFO faxed to my work in 10 min. The only thing the CFO wanted from me was my club membership number.

Reading the above comments, I guess that this is no longer the case.

It's hard to believe that in the same country the laws regarding ATT's are so different between the provinces. In Manitoba, as is in Alberta the ATT is on the fax in 30 minutes.
I wonder if Ontario's CFO's have their own restricted or even prohibs. And if so do you think they give themselves so much grief for an ATT.
I would really like to see all long term ATT's with a condition allowing you to go into the bush/wilderness with your restricted the same way as a long gun. The transportation method for restricted could stay the same (unloaded & locked in a case, and directly to and from), but wouldn't it be nice if you could play with your handgun in the bush. Besides if I miss the charging bear with the slugs or don't have time to grab the 12 ga., I could empty my 9mm or .45 into it as it's trying to dismember me.

Most clubs would rather that have it the way it is int west. Less trouble for them.

I always had the suspicion Canada was becoming communist.

They should rename it 'People's Republic of Ontario'.
