Tried trap shooting and want to get a suitable gun for it.

your asking opinion's of 1000's of people as to what would be a good starting point? My first purchase was a pump on sale at the local sporting store. I have put 100's if not thousands of rounds down range playing the trap game. I always drooled over the high end doubles saying one day. Years later my interest have gone from trap to cowboy action to 3 gun and black powder,. Point being what's the end game? head out now and then and bust some birds? Or become a Olympic skeet shooter? Like Daddy always said opinion's are like A$%holes everyone's got one. By what you like and fits and gets the job done. Upgrade from there if you get more competive. By the way I now shoot a single break action cooey for trap with a nice butt pad. And have beaten and been beat by the "high end guns" end of the day no ones asking for my autograph.

My 2 cents have fun, and share the sport with a non shooter or even better yet take a anti-gunner to the range and show him we are all not wingnuts. lol

Yes I am on a budget. I was looking at a cooey because of the price. I am willing to move to the 300 range but that's about it.

Very annoying having people come in and tell me to just go drop 1000 on a gun as if its no big deal

You have a pump gun, go use it, neither a cooey or a tradex sxs are good uses of your money. The people trying to tell you to spend $1000 are trying to save you money. I have worn out more then one sub $500 shotgun, they dont last, and once worn out are worthless.

A really cheap round of trap will cost $11, so 2 rounds a week will have you spending $1000 on clays and ammo in first year. If money is that tight, use the gun you have. A cooey will beat you up no matter what recoil pad you put on it.

I can tell you dont want to hear this, but $1000 is very entry level for a used shotgun that will hold up and be pleasant to shoot. Much of anything else is buying yourself frustration, even new guns at $1000 probably are. Everyone on here is trying to save you that frustration. So save your $300, and go shoot the pump you have, enjoy yourself, look at what others at the trap club shoot, they wont all be $10,000 guns, learn the game, learn how much you enjoy it, then decide if you can justify a gun for it that will serve the purpose well.

Dear Mr Snider577, I think I know why no one asks for your autograph at trap shoots!

Sorry.... couldn't resist! :)

Funny but no one has mentioned a Winchester SX1 or a Remington Trap. You can get away with Field models in both types if you are starting out. If you are just starting out, go to YouTube and search for Trap shooting and you will find some good hints on shooting Trap and Skeet if decide to go that way also.

I bought an older browning bt 99 trap off a guy at my club for 750$... Great gun.. excellent quality and they don't build them like that anymore....
