Picked up a nice rem 700 in .222 yesterday to replace the 788 with a shot out barrel.. Have some 55gr sierra gamekings kickin around thought i would give them a go just to get them used up, and use for coyotes this winter.

In the past H322 has been my go to powder.. started takin a look threw my manuals and online and with the 55gr bullet H322 is a little on the slow side.. I have seen IMR 4320 and Varget and Benchmark as good powders to use with 55gr bullets and yielding close to 3100fps... anyone try any of these powders.. i have all 3 on hand.. but dont have any others...

Thanks

Josh

I have not used any of the powders you named in my 222's. I tried imr 4895 but could not get the accuracy I was looking for. have since switched to imr 4198. it pushes the bullets faster with less powder so the barrel does not heat up as fast. every powder you listed have a slower relative burn rate than either imr 4198/h4198. even the h322 has a faster burn rate than the other 3 powders that you listed. varget has the slowest burn rate of all the powders listed.

My go to powder for my Sako Vixen is N130. It meters very well and accuracy is outstanding. I doubt you could find it today unfortunately. I only have 2.5 lbs left and over the past few years all efforts to procure more has failed. I also have never had any luck getting game kings to shoot well in any 22 cal rifle I've had. What I have noticed over the years is that they don't like to be pushed hard. In every case, min powder charges have yielded the best results in terms of accuracy. Of course that is only with my rifles and may not be typical of your particular 222. Check out the link above. There is some good reading there.

From the Sierra Infinity program:

Accuracy Load: IMR-4895/ 24.5grs. 3000fps/ 1099ft. lbs.
Hunting Load: 748/ 25.5grs. 3100fps/ 1173ft. lbs.

When I had a 222 Remington my load was the 50 grain Remington PLHP and 24 grain of 748.

Well Josh I'll tell ya' what works for me - Ram Shot X-Terminator. You can find their data on-line. I used that in my 700 with the heavy Bergers and it works great! Liked it so much I'm trying some in my 20 cal with 55 grain Bergers too.

Imr 4198 works in my Tikka whit most bullets. What works wonders on small game 40 gr vmax and a stiff charge of imr4198 very small groups very flat out to 200 but after that is becomes artillery. 21 gr imr 4198 with a 40 gr vmax is my standard load not hard on cases, can shoot lots before barrel gets too hot but still plenty fast for flat shots.

I have an older 722 Remington that I use 55 g sierras in. My load consists if w-w brass fed 205 primers and H335 powder that yields close to 3200 fps. My cases have last for quite a few loadings without the pockets getting loose. Accuracy is from .5-.75 inches at. 100 yards. Can't recall my powder charge but it was over the manual listed charge

I haven't used any of the powders you mentioned. I have used IMR4198, H335, BL-C(2), H4895, H414, IMR4350 and IMR3031.

my most accurate load was 18.5 grs of IMR4198 with a 50 gr Speer "TNT" hollow point, CCI 200 primers (Model 340 Savage).

thanks all!!! gotta love the Triple Deuce!! im selling my 22-250 (CZ 550 LUX) and just using this rifle temporarily.. the 700 barrel is going to come off the 700 and the gunsmith with fit it to my 788. so i will always have my .222. im going to get a barrel in 6 mm and turn my 700 that i just got into a 6x47(223 neck up to 6mm).. those will be my coyote guns.. i have always like the 222 with heavy bullets.... shot lots of 40gr at groundhogs and such but for coyotes they just seemed to kill slow.. load up some 50's and the coyote is dead in its tracks.. 247 yards longest kill to date with the .222.. 55's have always intrigued me... and with this game kings kicking around i thought... well now... those would be just beautiful on coyotes..... i think im going to have to crunch the bank and get myself some 4198 or H335 which i have used in the past.

At this point my .222 load in the 788 before the barrel was pooched was 23.7gr H322 under a 50gr hornady Vmax stuffed into an old WW super brass and all sparked off by a CCI 400 primer. Thanks again everyone!!!!

Josh

Well 24gr/Win 748 and a 55gr Hornady with the older style cannalure dropped around a dozen WT's and 3 black bear for my Dad in Ontario {with my handloads}.

I've had an old 340B in 222 and haven't taken much time to find a pet load for it: It's a truck/tractor beater that was rough before I got it topped with an old Weaver K2.5 or something like that(the tiny tube scope) How did you get enough IMR 4350 in a 222 case to make the bullet supersonic?

OP I have two "go to" powders for other 222s: Reloader 10x which is a bit faster burning than my first choice, IMR 4320. You should easily find a superb load with the 4320 powder you have on hand, but while you can get the velocity with this slower powder (for 222), it will be a very full case.

I bought my Savage 340 (new) in 1966 for $67. I have an old Weaver J4 'scope on it. It's still in great shape although the best accuracy has been shot out of it.

I used 24.5 grs of IMR 4350 with a 60 gr Hornady Spire Point bullet. The Hodgdon Manual 25th edition says this gives 2681 fps at only 37,600 CUP. Not the best load. IMR 3031 and 4198 give higher velocities (though with higher pressures).

with 55gr hornady's my newest and bestus load is with Rem. brass, CCI magnum primer. Win 748 powder 25.0gr. Seems 748 powder can be had much easier than many others. i haveused magnum primers with reloder 7 in 222 and they seem to give better accuracy with the loads we use in my 222 rifles. FS
