I am looking for a caliber to play "triple duty" on groundhogs, coyote and whitetail deer. I don't care much if it is overkill on groundhogs because I dont use them for anything but I want it to be good for coyote and deer. I was thinking something like the .243 Win would be a good choice, looks like it has bullets from 55gr to 110gr. I dont reload at all so all the ammo will be bought over the counter so please keep that in mind. Am I right with the .243 Win or is there something else better suited for these 3 animals?

I agree that the .243 or maybe a 6mm Remington would be perfect. My only other suggestion is perhaps a 22-250, if legal for deer where you are. A 22-250 with a barnes bullet would do a deer quite handily, and with varmint bullets it would do perfect for the g'hogs and coyotes.
But the .243 was invented for your exact needs, and would do very well.

The 243 is precisely the one for you and since you dont reload a 95 SST Hornady ( Baron has them at 27.00 for 20 ) at nearly 3200 fps will harvest them cleanly up to 300 metres even on a moose if you stay inside 200 metres ( My wife shot our two last mooses with her 243 and SST 95 gr both shots at 175 metres ) now for the gopher and the coyotes a nice 58gr Hornady @ 4000 fps will destroy them hope you are not in the pelts business. The Icon Precision hunter or the Venture are extremly accurate rifles but this is my 0.02 cents... JP.

How about the .243's parent, the .308? It will kill all 3 no problem and its not as limiting to hunt with. I know if i was whitetail hunting i'd feel a little more confident with a 308. A .243 has quite a bit less energy which means you better have pretty darn good shot placement at longer ranges.

Why limit yourself if you just want to blow up gophers and hunt deer and yotes? .308 will do that well, and cheap.

The OP is in Southern Ontario. You can't hunt with anything bigger than a .270 so the .308 might be out. ( Assuming he wants to hunt in Southern Ontario )

Whhaaaaaattttt? what the heck is that about? and why limit it to .270? As though it's less dangerous than a 308? really?

What a strange place... Am i missing something totally logical that im just not thinking of or is it just really that stupid?

Actually the 308 is better but i knew of those restrictions in SO so the 243 is the best thing and no limiting factors... JP.

My vote is for the 257 Roberts.

Other than that, the 260 and, 25-06 Remington, or the 270 Winchester, and don't forget the 6.5x55 or the 250 Savage or any of the WSSM's or WSM's or magnums 270 and under.
All will work...
