I am a black powder guy but have run out and until I get hold of some more, I'd like to load some 777 I have on hand.

Specifically, I need to know if my normal .45-70 load of powder, wad, black powder lube cookie and bp lube in the bullet is something I can leave as is except for the substitution of the powder.

I read about 777 on the Hodgdon's site, but found no specifics about lube type and no mention of a cookie under the bullet.

Any info would be most appreciated, thanks.

Triple Seven is about 15% more powerful than an equal volume of Black Powder so if you cut back you will need to fill the space with another wad or other filler. I have loaded .45Colt using 777 and it worked fine. I used the same lube and wads as with black powder with no problems

I have only used the 777 with handguns and found that it produces a lot of carbon-like deposits, not sure what affect this would have in a rifle bore. You might want to run a patch down the barrel every few shots just in case the deposits affect accuracy.

Thanks Skinny. By the paucity of replies, seems you and me are the only users of 777 on this board.
Not quite,I bought some of this stuff to try out in a 43 Mauser, but I picked up a can of 3F instead of 2F by mistake,I'm in the process of double checking on a load or loads for the old gal.I'm a little leery of substituting them one for the other. My understanding,I'll admit I'm a complete newbie on this 777 stuff,is that the 3F powder isn't supposed to be substituted for equivalent loads of 2F.Anyone use 3F 777 in one of these old Mausers?

I run mine with just smokless lube, it forms a gum and fouls worse with BP lubes its residue will bind up a revolver quickly remember with 777 do not compress more than very slightly or pressure spikes can accure this is mentioned on the Hodgen web site .I use it in my lever gun all the time and shoot it all day with just wax smokeless lube and cleans up easy .
