Trying to decide - Savage Mk2 or Cz452?

Hi folks,

I've been lurking about this forum for quite a while, and I've managed to pick up a lot of useful information. I currently own a Rem.597 and I want to get into a half decent target bolt action that isn't going to break the bank.

So, I've searched through the forum and found a few threads on similar subjects and I've managed to narrow down the choices for a new .22 to the following;

1) Savage MK II FVT: This thing has the sweet little accu-trigger and comes fitted out with a peep sight, and is available for about $400 (give or take)

2) CZ-452 American/Varmint: Seems to be the most recommended entry level target gun, but runs around $525, and I would have to sink another $80 or so into front and rear sights.

3) CZ-452 LUX: Dead ###y stock, runs around $500, and again, I would need to add a rear peep.

I think common consent on the board is that the CZ's are a little more accurate, but by how much? And do the differences *really* justify the extra $150 to $200 (as the increased price seems to be going mostly into the wood stock)? Lastly, would either of these actually perform well in competition or will I simply be shelling out for an Anshutz in a few years?

Cz/mkii

Hello: I currently have a CZ Varmint, American, and Style as well as a Savage MKII BTVSS. I like them all! I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

1) Savage MK II FVT: This thing has the sweet little accu-trigger and comes fitted out with a peep sight, and is available for about $400 (give or take)

Its also got a front globe site and a 5-shot removable mag. The peeps aren't Anschutz-class 18-way adjustable, but they are functional.

2) CZ-452 American/Varmint: Seems to be the most recommended entry level target gun, but runs around $525, and I would have to sink another $80 or so into front and rear sights.

Or more! The American is designed to be scoped, so on top of the price of sites, you'd need machining/drilling/tapping gunsmith charges too. With a Brooks trigger kit installed, the CZ trigger is every bit as good as the Accutrigger.

3) CZ-452 LUX: Dead ###y stock, runs around $500, and again, I would need to add a rear peep.

Had one, loved it, but its for sale. That deady ###y stock is a field stock, not well suited to peep sites or scopes. Is perfect for snap shooting in the field. The rear fixed site bridge doesn't take a peep site well. Brooks sells a peep insert for the rear tangent site. Its usable but not serious competition grade.

will I simply be shelling out for an Anshutz in a few years?

Sooner or later, everyone owns an Anschutz.....

I was in the same spot you are last year... I was sold on a 452 American...

but then along came a Brno #4 on the EE... bought it, and have never looked back. The moral... don't sell a used rifle short... some awesome choices are out there and for less than a mediocre new one...

I never had CZ, the way it goes its only a matter of time... Right now I shoot Savage MkII with accutrigger and I love it. I win all our local matches with it! Well, not all but most of them. Just buy half-descent ammo ( Lapua or Federal gold medal) and you are under 1MOA on a calm day. What else can be said?

cz/mark II

I have both, have tuned both triggers and yet preferr the cz over the savage. I did not like the synthetic stock on the FVT so I replaced it with the pepper laminate stock from my pre accutrigger BV. I was searching cz's websight last night seeing about a new cz with target sights. The TOZ-12 is awesome but I would still like another that I can but a scope on and use in the field. I found the Savage a bit shot in the length of pull for me to shoot consistantly off the bench but free hand it fits like a glove. It is to bad the new CZ 452 Silhouette does not come with target sights installed or I would be all over that. I was pondering selling the FVT with the laminate stock and upgrading to the far superior CZ, if I can find one that can easily be adapted to target sights.

I would go with the CZ.

IMO there are more accurate, better build, and just overall a better gun. Definately can't go wrong with a CZ!

Anschutz are in a different league as the guns mentioned but I am sure sooner or later you will get one. My CZ came first and it is still my go to grouse gun but the anschutz are a better gun overall. They come with a pricetag though ;)

If you're going to get a Savage Mark II, my advice would be to examine it before you buy it. I bought one in Janurary, an FSS model, and it didn't shoot too bad, but had pits in the muzzle end of the barrel that concerned me, and a horrible grooved/pitted crown. Sent it back. Rebarrelled. Came back, didn't shoot quite as well as the first, but no pits. Bad chamber, and rust on the outside right from the factory. On a stainless barrel. Sent it back, they replaced the whole thing. Replacement had pits in muzzle and chamber ends of the bore. The chamber was bad. And the bolt didn't cycle properly. And the crown was the worst yet. Sent it back, and expecting a refund cheque. Going to buy a CZ now, probably an American. Sure liked that AccuTrigger, but had nothing but bad luck with the rest of the rifle.

I second the used brno. To bad you missed it. A #5 brno actually sold on the EE here for $250. Easily 1/2 price. Granted it had some stock issues but one hell of a buy. Here's my take, in 10 yrs the savage will be worth less than $250 and any CZ or brno will keep going up in value.-----Cowboy

I also own both. My Savage has laminated stock, I don't like the plastic one. Both are good rifles and shoot very well for me. However, I believe the CZ is better made and will last a couple of lifetimes if taken care of. I notice obvious and significant wear on the forward 1/2" of the Savage bolt which leads me to believe that the steel used is fairly low grade. The machining tolerances are tighter on my CZ, to the point where the bolt tended to bind unless well oiled when it was new but it has worn in nicely now.

Regarding cost of mounting aperature sights, if you are looking at getting in to prone or 3 position shooting neither the CZ nor Savage are what you want. Bide your time and keep your eyes open for a good used Anchutz or similar that is already set up for the game you want to play. A cheap way in would be to buy one of the Shultz and Larson prone rifles that Tradex currently has for sale at a reasonable price.

I Love my CZ 452 some say to upgrade trigger but mine breaks free at 2lbs.
Maybe I will some day try the timminy but really I just wish I bought some 10 shot clips

Man.. I still dunno what to do! It seems that everyone agrees that they are both decent rifles, but the CZ seems to be the way to go.

Yodave's, Shorty's and particularly 762shooters posts are really pushing me towards the CZ..

'Course there's the accu-trigger wich is still ultra sweet! And i could pimp out the MKII with the cash I'd save... hmm

I think my best bet is going to be to take a trip to the gun shop this weekend and try them both out to see which feels nicer.

If I go CZ, skeetgunner's post makes me think the LUX is out.. so I'm leaning to the Varmint cus of the barrel.

762Shooter: I don't really want to go single shot if I can help it right now, because I'm still a fairly new shooter, and the thought of plopping a round in the chamber 4,000 odd times seems a little tedious. I'm afraid it might turn me of!.. That being said, Shooter Choice has a Marlin 2000l for $300 if anyone is interested ;)

triggers

I had to cut three coils off the accu trigger spring before i would even call it close to sweet. now it is sweet. I put a eric brooks trigger kit in the cz and it is really sweet. In fact i just did another one tonight for a really happy fellow shooter. The shorter heavy barrel of the varmint model is no real advantage, the lighter barrel of the american is said to shoot better. the only advantage to the varmint is it now comes with a set trigger. I have put both rifles to the side since I bought that TO3-12 from th EE. I still prefer my CZ over the Savage though. And if you want a single shot later there is a conversion clip for the cz that makes it a single shot, I have always wanted one as I spend to much time filling clips and i like being able to lay on on the plate and close the bolt. You hit the nail on the head though go to the store and handle both, pick the one that feels right to you. Like 762shooter said the finish on the savage isn't half the finish of the cz mine makes the gun look cheap and it is only a couple months old.

I bought a Mark II couple weeks ago, have about 250 rds thru it. Nice shooting rifle from a rest but I REALLY wish I'd bought the heavy barrel, it's too light for me freehand.

I have a Savage MKII-F, synthetic/sporter bbl, cost under $200. I'm very happy with it. So much so that I just bought a MKII FV with the bull bbl and scope mounts ($269). I have to pick it up from the post office later today. Let's see how it shoots compared to the sporter.

I had the Savage, then bought the CZ later. Sold the Savage almost immediately. No comparison in my opinion. I did install a Brooks trigger kit in the CZ and now have a very light, safe trigger that breaks like a glass rod. The only 22 rimfires that I own that outshoot my CZ are considerably higher on the cost scale. For a solid, smooth 22 rimfire, the CZ is the winner. Regards, Eagleye.
