Trying to get good.

Here are some samples from today's range trip that I think best describe my general marksmanship of the day.

This was done all at around 5-8 yards, wouldn't know exactly I just walked 6-7 paces and figured. Targets were ripped in fours since I was running low...

SO? How is it? I noticed I still get a bit of flinch 15% of the time. That and my cigarette/coffee shakes throw me off sometimes.

On another note. I seen some local LEO's at the range, while some who probably practice a lot with their govt ammo, personal ammo, generally like guns, etc are really good. Most are "okay" at best.

What I'm trying to ask is, what "level" in terms of shooting skill are most LEO's at? I know that most probably couldn't tell you the model of their gun/grain of ammo they are using. A lot probably just do "enough" to "qualify" but at the end of the day they're probably decently competent with their system to be allowed to carry a gun and potentially use it.

What is this "level"? What do these groupings look like at 10, 15 and even 25 yards?

I'd like to use this as my short term goal/staple. I mean, these guys go to the academy, then train on a pistol day in day out until they qualify and get pushed into the field. Pretty "express" in terms of training so I don't think its farfetched to be shooting like that in a few months. How many rounds do they pop off/hours spent on range before you get to the "LEO Level"?

No offence intended to any LEO's here ('cause they no doubt can shoot) but, you are already far superior in accuracy to any LEO at my range. Those guys/gals generally can't shoot. The brinks crews I know is a different story.

OP what was the cadence of your shooting on those targets?

There's no way. Are you serious? No way a dozen range trips and a few thousand rounds equals average LEO skill...

I'm not quite sure I've been aquainted with the term "cadence" so I looked it up and it seems to mean...

ca·dence (kdns)
n. pl. ca·denc·es
1. Balanced, rhythmic flow, as of poetry or oratory.
2. The measure or beat of movement, as in dancing or marching.
3.
a. A falling inflection of the voice, as at the end of a sentence.
b. General inflection or modulation of the voice.
4. Music A progression of chords moving to a harmonic close, point of rest, or sense of resolution.

So if your trying to get at, what the general "flow" of my shots were. Well, they are generally taken in quick succession. Not rapid fire but the mag won't last 30 seconds. I'm standing up and change my angle towards the target sometimes.

...err, yea. Cadence=timing (as in music). I was asking how rapid your rate of fire was. More often than not If I'm taking my time with careful aim (bullseye shooting) I can't hold the gun out that long to shoot an entire mag (arm or arms start to quiver). I'm no 100lbs weakling by any stretch of the imagination (6'x165lbs). When shooting like this its 2 maybe 3 shots and I have to rest the gun.

If you are acquiring sights after recoil and ripping another one you are shooting very well, and certainly better than any LEO I've seen. (one occasion the guy {LEO} was shooting in the other lane and was confused when it was brought to his attention...he wasn't hitting the target in the other lane mind you, just shooting at it!? I'm not even joking!)

Well it's not like the movies I'll give it that much. Pistols are a heck of a lot more inaccurate then I thought... Some days I can hit some I can't hit for crap. With the perfect balance of nicotine and caffeine I'm as steady as a hawk but some days the shakes get the best of me.

My order of B27 targets came in the mail, so I'll give those a try in a few days once my rotating shift is up. I got some 147 Grain 9mm ammo too, I'll see if a fatter "slower" round will improve my accuracy.

I find that the standard 115 Grain 9mm is "snappier" then the 124gr stuff I've been using. Is there commercially available +P or +P+ ammo that isn't some "critical defense" load that costs $30 for 20 rounds? That's probably that only type of ammo I haven't tried yet.

Front sight ... Front sight ... Front sight ...

You will improve greatly if you learn Glock trigger reset and use your front sight.

That's what my kids said after they tried handguns for the first time. After that and shooting some rifles offhand I have totally ruined action movies for them, because they now know how fake it really is.:D

Don't give up, it just takes practice to get the muscle memory grooved and working properly. I found dry firing helped the most and it is easy to do at home every night.

Your statement is wrong. Handguns are not inaccurate, its you who is.

Okay had time to hit the range for the first time in two weeks. Got some more pictures of how the range day generally went. Pumped out about 300 rounds. They weren't my only targets just what I felt was the best general representation of overall performance.

First target of the day, warmup.

General marksmanship. Shots taken at 10 yards/meters. I take my time somewhat but a mag won't last me more then 30 seconds so it's moderately fast compared to some shooters.

Here is a snap from a rapid fire "ODPL" style drill I was performing. Gun loaded, placed on the table in front of me, on 3 I would grab it and unload as fast as I could on the target. Mag didn't last more then 5 seconds.

So to the pros? Taking into account some of the first target pics I posted when I pretty much first started using my new Glock, hows progress?

Hey, i live in the GTA and am getting a Glock 17 gen 4 in a couple months. What range do you go to?

I would say that you have effectively halted that target's malicious intent with little to no collateral damage/injury. :) Good job! {easier on the tax payer, less paperwork for LEO's and prosecuting attorneys ;)}

Relax! It's a joke! (your shooting isn't though)

...full moon white dot front sight, right!?

Funny how when you talk to people that work for Glock and are Glock sponsored shooters how they'll tell you 3 and 4 are the correct sight pictures, although 3 isn't drawn correctly really, as the circle is fully visible with the top of the sights level.

my glock sights are exactly like #3 when properly aligned.

I'm no pro, but i would say you are generally off to a good start. If you want to level set your ability try some of standards from Kyle Defoor, Ken Hackathorn, or even the F.A.S.T. Drill (all can be found on the net). After completing one, or all of them, you'll get a pretty good sense of where you are as a handgunner.

Once you are humbled by the above tests, try to seek professional instruction. You will come away a much better shooter, and be able to work on your goals with a solid understanding of the fundamentals.

:cheers: Mini15 you 10m group is not bad at all

Your next goal is all in the 10 ring from the 10m ;) my best is score on the RCMP targets was 10rds in the 10ring from the 15m, 10m, 7m, 5m, 3m course of fire. I was taking my sweet A.. time though lol

Must have been a while ago, there hasn't been a '10 ring' on an rcmp target for years, at least 13-14...

Pistol used was a Gen3 G19 with regular connector (I think, haven't had it apart to check but it's definitely not a '-' connector). 15 rounds on each target, except the last one, 30 on that one since it was at 10 and 15m,
