Just getting into reloading and figured I tumble some brass before I get the pross sorted out..

I picked up a lyman turbo tumbler, and some of the lymans tufnet (chushed nut shell)..

when I tried my first batch, it came out like crap.. the shells where clean, but covered with a film, and lots of dust in the rim area.. I basically have to towel off each one to get to the shine under it..

this is "out of the box" stuff.. do they really come out like that, or is something wrong??

I use a Lyman Turbo Tumbler and the Lyman corn cob media. Brass always comes out shiny and without a film on it.

Not to highjack the thread but what do you guys think of the Lyman Turbo Tumbler? They all kinda look the same, I was hesitating but oredered the Lyman Turbo last week.

I used both. Tufnut cleaned casing does come out coated with the jeweler rouge. You will have to wipe it off. Corn cob media cleaned casings comes out clean. The advantage of tufnut media is it takes less time to clean the casing. Your pick, faster clean time and a bit of wiping or longer clean time and no wiping.

I use the tufnut, then I use corn cob for a short period of time to clean off the rouge. It works for me.....no wiping and the cases look great.

Oh........yes, I have two bowls.

I use a mix of 3/4 corn cob and 1/4 walnut shell with some Dillon case polish thrown in. Works well for me.

I have a Lyman tumbler. It's fine. I'm not a big fan of the sifter lid though since it lets dust get all over the place.

cheap barss media

I find walnut is the best for cleaning brass . I got a tip too from CGN for cheap crushed walnut . Buy it in bulk at your local pet store IE petsmart or where ever . You can get a 10 to 15 LBS for twenty bucks . And it works great . And it lasts alot longer than corn cob . Have fun Joe Lafortune CD

For an inexpensive media, go to the bulk section of your super market and get 1 or 2 lbs of white rice and 1 or 2 lbs of brown rice and mix 50/50 . The brass comes out shiny and the brown rice leaves a slightly oily film that makes sizing very easy. It works well and is cheap.

Hey ckc123,
Forgive me for laughing, but I did the same thing.
New reloader ,new tumbler,Lyman tufnut.
Red dust everywhere.
That crap should be banned.
I dumped it and got some plain old walnut media and some Dillon polish.
No more DUST FROM MARS all over the place.
Do yourself a favor.DUMP IT !

blackball and bearman, thanks for the tips!!! I wish I knew this before shelling out 10 bucks for 2lbs of crushed walnut shells in a zip lock bag at my local gunstore. I guess those ziplock bags can get expensive.;)

I have a Lyman 1200 with the sifter lid. Just got it and haven't played with it too much. First tumble is going on as I type this. I guess I'll try saran wrapping the lid if there is too much dust kicking around.

Put a few used fabric softener sheets in and tumble for a half hour or so. It will collect some of the excess dust.

I use the pet store walnut stuff too with some Nu Finish car polish added in.
