Turning an old bubba'd no.4 mk1 into a usable rifle.

Well I felt bad for my old sporterized Lee Enfield. It was sitting in the back corner of the safe for so long without getting out with the rest of it's friends. Bubba had already cut the buttstock an inch shorter and cut most of the fore end wood off. So I decided to breath a little life back into it and get it out again.

The end of the barrel was a little corroded and the crown was completely butchered so I didn't mind cutting the barrel back. I parted it of in a lathe to 18.5" and cut an 11 degree target crown. Now the crown is crisp and clean and the rifling looks good.

The trigger looked like crap so I polished the metal and rounded it out, then reblued the steel. Now my finger feels much more comfortable on the bang button.

I also polished the bolt and reblued the bolt head.

After that I figured it could use a little colour so I painted the barrel, receiver, trigger guard and magazine and scope all Kyrlon matte tan. Then I painted the stock with Krylon olive drab.

I installed an ATI scope mount and a cheap Tapco 3x9x32 scope. The only rings I had kicking around were high mount rings but I threw them on there anyways. I have a set of low mount rings coming in the mail along with a knock-off harris bipod.

So now my old Lee Enfield is going to fit in with it's more modern counterparts in the safe. I can't wait to get it out to the range so it can stretch it's legs.

Cheers,

UPDATE:

I tried out this girl at 230 yards and was getting 4" groups with factory Winchester ammo while prone. Thanks to Vviking I have given her a good cleaning and removed a ton of copper from the bore. I expect it to tighten the groups out a little more. I was hitting a 6" gong at 160 yards with almost every shot. It still starts to heat up and shoot vertical groups after five shots or so. But I figure that's still pretty good for this old girl in her new dress.

Cheers!

Nice job, I'm not a big fan of sporterized Milsurps, but your's looks exceptionally decent. I'd take her out for a deer hunt with confidence!

I like the Tan, that turned out quite nice.
Definately gotta drop the scope a bit as you said.

Im getting a franken-bubba'd .303 to a smith to be "45-70-ified" and have been debating colour options. So its nice to see these things in different colors.

Looks good! I like the idea of making it look modern so that the shame of the bubbanation is well concealed from the untrained eye. I might do a project like this myself one day if I come across the right candidate.

IMO, that thing is one set of camo stripes from being a kick-ass piece of work to rescue an otherwise sad excuse for a victim of bubba.

OP, let us know how it shoots with that short barrel and new stock.

your rifle looks great

I got one of those neoprene slip on cheek peices from bear something I can't remember it works great on my enfield sporter.

Nice looking gun. I had a similar version I made from a drilled and tapped one but it was blued with the black stock. I like yours better.

"...Enfield is rolling in his grave..." Highly unlikely considering Enfield is a place.
You slug the barrel first?

I didn't bother slugging the barrel. After parting the end off I measured the inside between the lands and got 0.311" so I figured that is pretty good. I had it to the range and am able to get 2" groups at 100 yards if I give it time to cool down. I ran out of ammo before getting it dialed in though. If I don't let it cool down much my groups open up to about 6"! I thought with the shorter barrel it wouldn't be affected as much. But then again, the barrel was too hot to hold on to... When I get my new rings I will take my time and dial it in propperly. I'm hoping to get below 2" groups. I would be happy with that. Actually I am already happy with what I have gotten. Before I revived this old rifle I was lucky to get on paper 3 out of 5 shots. This is all with that Federal soft point ammo from Canadian Tire.

Once I get it dialed in with the new rings I'll update with some new pics.

Thanks for the compliments guys. And I know not everyone likes it, but I like it quite a bit and thats all that matters.

Oh, and as far as recoil, it's a lot less with the new stock and recoil pad. It's not even as loud as I thought it would be. It is actually a pleasure to shoot.

Cheers,

I am humbled by those groups......{where's that pie:redface:} I don't like the looks of it still but you know what they say about opinions. With a lot more practice I too hope for consistant 2" groups @ 100.
Is Lee buried in Enfield?....if so I'm sure HE"S rolling in his grave!:D....but that kind of grouping would make him proud I'm sure:p

Nice work. Ya need another project.
My recent acquisition. Bubbed to the tenth degree. The stock alterations.

And another accessary

The things I didn't show are the bayonet lugs ground off, the barrel cut, the barrel painted 3 times! The newly applied serial number. The rifling is strong, it hits a 10 inch gong at 100. I just don't know if its worth fixing.
