Turret? Progressive? Single Stage? Reloading Press for Beginner

Thanks for the advice everyone I picked up both a single stage and a progressive press for $450 on a black friday sale. I am going to try both and sell which ever one I don't need. Currently most of my needs aren't high on accuracy and more about affordability. I think the progressive press will do it for me but I bought both and will resell at a later date, the 500 bullets for each press really makes it worth the purchase on top of the awesome price.

Which ones did you get?

I have been loading 223 on a Dillon 550 for a few years. Great for volume, not so great for precision. As previously mentioned the powder throw is not super accurate. Now I am looking to load precision 223 and 308 for a Savage and Ruger RPR and am debating what to do. I have ordered AD Fx120 scale and Autotricker so my powder loads will be spot on but the question is do I FL resize, seat primers and bullets on the Dillon or do I pick up a single stage like the CO-AX. I think I will see how accurate I can seat bullets operating as a single stage but I have also heard that Dillon cannot seat primers deep enough for precision.

Will probably mess around with the Dillon for a bit first but I am tempted. Process will be SS tumble brass, anneal, de prime and FL resize, tumble, trim on Giraud trimmer, maybe anneal again, prime, trickle, seat on Dillon, then maybe give a slight crimp. Seems like so much work lol.

Anyone operating a Dillon like this? How did it work?

You can tell yourself that.

That single stage will come in just as handy as the other. They fill different needs, you'll need both!

great price! Enjoy

Primers will only seat to the depth of the primer pocket. Dillons do that. You may have heard it but it certainly in not true! I often have just used my Dillon to seat the primers for the convenience of the Dillon priming system. Some of my friends who do a lot of bench rest shooting in the US load using powder scoops relying on powder volume rather than powder weight. They sit and use the same case over and over and.... Bullet seating depth, neck tension, cartridge case and precise crimp probably has more affect of accuracy in that game than powder measured to a tenth of a grain. just saying.

My problem when I considered loading .308 on my Dillon was I found it was not much faster as I spent an inordinate amount of time getting the cases to sit straight. I found I enjoyed the hobby more when I loaded my rifle cartridges on the single stage. Seems to me there is a whole lot more prep work loading good rifle ammo than there is loading pistol cartridges for action pistol shooting.

Best I have managed with my cast was 1/2" center to center 3 rounds 30-06 at 100 yards using a cast bullet and 1 1/2" five round group with my .303 Longbranch at 100 yards scoped using the 314299 Lyman bullet. Not much really but about as good as I can do. I just don't have the patience to do much of that kind of shooting. Different strokes for different folks.

Take Care

Bob
