...Well, sorta...

I might be posting too much in this section, but what can I say? I just want to share my excitement with some like minded folks. My wife doesn't give a hoot about guns and I don't know many other shooters personally enough to ramble on about it to.

I had so much fun at the range last sunday with my 700 SPS .223 that I decided I had some expendable rifles, and I would need sell them off to fund a new toy. I wanted something a bit bigger.

I scored a straight trade last night for my Mini 14, and got myself a 700 5R. So now my excruciating dilemmas begin. Stock? Chassis? Glass?

Right now both 700s sit in Identical stocks. Just the black and green webbed 5R HS Precision stocks. Both had cheek risers installed before I got them. I successfulIy installed a magpul DBM in my .223's stock.# I really enjoy the way these stocks look and feel in my hands BUT I want something different to look at.

Right now my options are to keep the HS stock from the .308, and pop in another Magpul DBM, and maybe paint it a different colour to satisfy my desire for diversity in the safe.

Or I am thinking I could sell the new HS stock and pick up an MDT LSS. My only issue with this option is that I just can't dig a Remington 700 with a regular AR style butt stock , but the alternatives are very pricey. I like the XLR stock and the MDT light skeleton stock but $200-300 for a butt stock is big coin for me. I just want something simple and adjustable, and NOT artsy fartsy like some of the other options I've seen.

The reason the MDT LSS got my attention is because I tried an RPR last week. I loved it but after doing my research I realized I could get a lot of what I liked about the RPR out of a 700 in a chassis.

So...

HS = simple, cheaper and I know I like it. I can get creative and paint it. Im unsure if I should do that though because right now Its almost mint except for the added cheek riser, and modifying it will kill the resale value if i change my mind.

MDT= More money but will give me a rifle that feels very different than what I already have which might be a good thing. Having two similar setups could be good for consistency from a training perspective. But I am not overly serious at this point. I've still got a lot to learn and practice. Right now I'm mostly just having some fun and I dig variety.

decisions, decisions...

Also I'm thinking for glass, a Vortex Viper HS 4-16×. I'm also considering a Leupold VX2 with similar magnification. Would these two be comparable, for those who have used both?

I would welcome any input you gents might have.

Why not consider a magpul hunter.. the DBM fits in, similar to the HS... inexpensive and more mods coming all the time.

MDT stuff is nice but some will prefer a more traditional stock feel. Both work and are great values.

For optics, have a look at the Athlon family if FFP orientated.. Sightron if SPF focused. I think you will find these will offer far greater performance for the money spent.

if I can help, let me know.. Lots of package deals.

Thanks

Jerry

Is your main forcus range and precision or hunting? Or all of the above. I started out with a 700 .308 with the hogue stock, for hunting it was good but dirt was hard to brush off the rubber. After considering the MDT I wanted something more tactical/precision and not so over the top precision so I went with the chote tactical (basically a plastic aluminum v bedded McMillan a5 replica). Not only did I add some weight it shoots way better than stock, it was cheap and looks great.

All that being said I recently bought a mdt Lss for my mark II .22 and my first time at the range with it I was blown away. It shoots so well, and I love the fact that you can really make it to your specs with unlimited amount of parts for it. Those chassis are so comfortable to shoot, it feels like you’re one with the gun! I loved it so much I am thinking about building one in 6.5 or another .308...I do like the LSS XL for the bigger caliber though it seems a little more substantial.

Yeah I think I'm going to give the chassis a shot IF I manage to sell the HS stock. I have a few sales pending and if it all works out I should have enough to put something pretty cool together. I like the idea that i could swap back and forth between rifles too if I have 1 HS setup and 1 mdt setup. I just need to find a tasteful butt stock without going over budget.

I would stay away from anything in the Vortex line below the Razor Gen-II

I have seen 2 Viper PST scopes go down in the same match due to internal moisture and fogging issues.

Thanks for all the advice. so much to choose from. I'm still torn between a traditional style stock and a chassis. I dont want to get too crazy with the price, probably about $500 on the stock and glass each, give or take. (probably a bit more than that on glass but there are some deals out there).

For the stick I'm hoping to get something either aluminum or fibreglass. The polymer is fantastic I'm sure, but its just my preference. Thats why the magpul/ krg stocks arent hitting the spit for me, although they are very nice.

Anyone know how close the magpul DBM is to the M5 inlet? there are a couple B&C stocks with an M5 inlet I've been eyeing in the last couple days, and I'm hoping I can get away with only modifying the Magpul dbm and not the stock.

Get the bravo, looks better than Magpul, Takes acid mags and way more modular. +1 for go big tactial, great service.

I have a Bravo from Go Big and it really is an awesome value. I have had a lot of the good stuff (Manners, AI, MPA, KRG W3) and the Bravo has a really good blend of value and features. It is kind of like an AICS where it is an aluminum back bone with a polymer covering. The adjustable cheek piece and LOP are great features as well.

I really love my MPAs but have to say when shooting in the winter those aluminium chassis get mighty cold.

Well, after doing a lot of research and trying to sell the HS stock to no avail, Ive decided to just keep it, slap a coat of paint on her, carve out the magwell area and throw another magpul DBM in this one.

I was looking at MDT chassis, B&C, etc to keep things cost effective but found myself being pulled to the more expensive options. There is some very nice stuff out there for the $400-500+ that these options will cost on top of bottom metal Ive decided to just hold off and save for something nicer. It may cost double at least but buy once/ cry once I guess. Plus I get to have some fun with my "cheap" setup for now.

My new magpul DBM kit and a couple MDT mags (1 metal snd 1 poly to compare) were delivered today. I prepped the stock last night so all I have to do is trim the magpul unit and put it all together.

I'm all over the place when it comes to what I want to do with this rifle. So better to figure out what I want and save up and not settle. McMillan stocks are looking NICE.

My vote would be for the LSS too. I started with a Tikka T3 in an LSS and learned so much from it that I just kept building off of them! Bang for your buck, the LSS is a great way to get started and learn what you like/don't like about a chassis without having that plasticy, chap feel of some of the other options. If you're looking for a buttstock that won't break the bank, there are usually a few older Skeleton Rifle Stock V2's or V3's on the EE, or I may even have an old SRS lite floating around. There are a ton of options out there and tons of good information, but make sure to do your research and handle as many as you can before you buy :)

Agreed. They are far beyond the quality of anything else I own. There are just so many options it seemed silly to have 2 Identical stocks for these rifles. I think I might just hold off for a while so I can save enough to get something I wont be settling for.

That said, these rifles will out shoot me for a long time as they are, I'm sure. Nothin wrong with 'em.

Picked it up on here. Minus some of the furniture and optic. It should be fun!

Im told my other 700 was done professionally by Gun Room in Waterloo, I'm not sure if they did it themselves, or sourced it out. Maybe give them a call and see what they say? And then let me know, and ill do the new 700 too. :)

Here is what I got going on. After painting the barreled action to match my camo job, I bailed and painted the stock black. The green looked pretty good with the black so I kept it. Just waiting for Glass money once I sell another gun, and Im going to have Tacord install a bolt knob. almost done...for now.
