...Well, sorta...
I might be posting too much in this section, but what can I say? I just want to share my excitement with some like minded folks. My wife doesn't give a hoot about guns and I don't know many other shooters personally enough to ramble on about it to.
I had so much fun at the range last sunday with my 700 SPS .223 that I decided I had some expendable rifles, and I would need sell them off to fund a new toy. I wanted something a bit bigger.
I scored a straight trade last night for my Mini 14, and got myself a 700 5R. So now my excruciating dilemmas begin. Stock? Chassis? Glass?
Right now both 700s sit in Identical stocks. Just the black and green webbed 5R HS Precision stocks. Both had cheek risers installed before I got them. I successfulIy installed a magpul DBM in my .223's stock.# I really enjoy the way these stocks look and feel in my hands BUT I want something different to look at.
Right now my options are to keep the HS stock from the .308, and pop in another Magpul DBM, and maybe paint it a different colour to satisfy my desire for diversity in the safe.
Or I am thinking I could sell the new HS stock and pick up an MDT LSS. My only issue with this option is that I just can't dig a Remington 700 with a regular AR style butt stock , but the alternatives are very pricey. I like the XLR stock and the MDT light skeleton stock but $200-300 for a butt stock is big coin for me. I just want something simple and adjustable, and NOT artsy fartsy like some of the other options I've seen.
The reason the MDT LSS got my attention is because I tried an RPR last week. I loved it but after doing my research I realized I could get a lot of what I liked about the RPR out of a 700 in a chassis.
So...
HS = simple, cheaper and I know I like it. I can get creative and paint it. Im unsure if I should do that though because right now Its almost mint except for the added cheek riser, and modifying it will kill the resale value if i change my mind.
MDT= More money but will give me a rifle that feels very different than what I already have which might be a good thing. Having two similar setups could be good for consistency from a training perspective. But I am not overly serious at this point. I've still got a lot to learn and practice. Right now I'm mostly just having some fun and I dig variety.
decisions, decisions...
Also I'm thinking for glass, a Vortex Viper HS 4-16×. I'm also considering a Leupold VX2 with similar magnification. Would these two be comparable, for those who have used both?
I would welcome any input you gents might have.
