Anyone know what the standard stuff is for the smaller pouches on the chest rig? Is it for loose rounds, or oil bottle/cleaning kit type stuff, grenades, etc.?

From what I gather, it depends on the pouch. It's either an oiler, cleaning bag or for spare shorter magazines.

Check out this neat video:

The Type 81 rig has 4 30 rd single mag pouches and 2 smaller ancillary pouches.

Perhaps you have a Type 56 (AK) rig which has 3 30 rd single mag pouches and 4 ancillary pouches? There is also a Type 56 rig with 3 30 rd double mag pouches with dividers and 4 ancillary pouches.
it is a type 56 AK rig then...looks unissued, and fits vz-58 mags pretty good...

Ok net me explain this better

Mine fits like this too except the buckle at the back of it won't close cuz it's meant for a 120lb Asian

well now that I know mine is not the same I can't say ####, lol...

Speaking of rifle grenades, anyone be able to find a mounted photo? I can't find what they look like. I wanna find/make dummy's

It would seem that the Chinese used or used the type 90 rifle grenade. It shows it in a Type 95. But the link has some good pics of what the various grenades look like. I think the attached sight is an interesting feature.

Holy crap, that's genius! Thanks! The 5-mag pouches they have in the video are even better than the tiny chest rigs! Way more practical for range, hunting, etc use. :)

Here's the cheapest one on eBay (new condition surplus):

Just by chance, I ended up on a web page that talked about a 4.5mm cal airgun based on the Type 81. Like its' big bro, it's made in China. Air gun appears to cycle via a side lever.

This would make for a much better companion to the Type 81 than the non-fitting bayo, IMHO. American forums seem to suggest these were selling for $30 - $50 US at around 2009-2010. Some guys say this air rifle is about 40 years old (?).

Presenting the "Xi Feng SX-B8" ;)

A little late to the party, but I have two of these! Or at least variants of them. Mine fire .22 pellets for air guns and there's no magazine well so they're single shot breech loaders. It's crazy how skookum the folding stocks are, like no play whatsoever. I'll try to get some pics if anyone's interested!

Sure people will be interested, but my guess is that they're going to be a lot more interested AFTER receiving the real thing, lol! Right now everyone's too hyped up about getting these in hand; once the initial magic wears off, they'll be looking for accessories and other cool doo-dads to go with the rifle.

In fact, the "trainer" version of the Type 81 probably deserves its' own thread in the red rifles section after the delivery (even though it's an airgun). It's kind of a shame that they don't make it anymore (from what I understand), as it would've certainly sold quite well right now.

Also, it's great to hear that the folding stock is tight and has held up well all these years. I wouldn't be surprised if the folding stock on the trainer version is the actual Type 81 folder (as it's cheaper and faster to manufacture both versions that way).

:)

I agree lol, if a thread pops up in the red rifles section I'll definitely get some content out there.
I've had them for well over a decade and beat on the stocks pretty hard, and they're still as tight as the day they were made. Kind of boggles the mind to be honest.

I would take some of the info in these videos with a grain of salt. PLA issue 30 rd mags for Type 56/81 and 20 rd mags for Type 63. All indications are that 5-15 rd mags are for commercial markets. Just because a pouch will fit something does not support that use, I think U.S. Youtubers just likes extra mags!!!

Use of the ancillary pouches varies by rifle/vest type.

Although not definitive, the most likely to least likely use is as follows:

On all the rigs one of the side pockets is lined with a vinyl-like membrane. This pocket is for the oil bottle with the impervious liner designed to control leaking/stainage.

All PLA fixed stock rifles have room in the buttstock for the standard cylindrical SKS/AK type cleaning kit, it makes little sense to carry it in a pouch from which it can easily slip. However under folding stock Type 56-1 do not have provision in the buttstock therefore in a rig side pocket is the next best thing. Side folding Type 56-2 have provision for cleaning kit in stock.

Grenades. PLA have used a variety of rifle and hand grenades over the years. They issue a separate carrier for stick (Type 67 and 77) and rifle grenades for which the various rig side pouches are too small. However they do issue many standard smooth bodied and segmented body hand grenades, initially based on the Russian FR1 (Type 1) and RGD-5 (Type 59). These would fit in the side pockets.

Mag loader? I have seen stamped metal mag loaders that allow 10 rd SKS chargers to be used to fill a 30 rd mag (is current issue PLA ammo in stripper clips or bulk pack?). I have no idea if this loader is an issue or commercial item but it would make sense to keep it in the rig side pocket if issued.

Loose pack ammo. Paper wrapped bundles for reload would fit the side pockets.

Ballistite cartridges for launching rifle grenades.

Extra cleaning supplies such as rags for patches etc.

There is no evidence that PLA troops are authorized to carry or use spare parts.

Hope this helps.

That's what I thought. In the cheek rest.

You are no doubt correct, I have never handled a Type 81.

The earlier Type 56-1 with under folder do not have any provision for cleaning kits, so I presume they would carry it in their rig pocket.

If you mean the T81SA semi auto version then I'm pretty sure none, the exact number of military versions made with an underfolder is likely not known, and was probably produced for a specific contract...I don't think any PLA issued rifles had that stock option...though some dudes here been doing more research than me, likely.
