I wonder if anyone has any pics (from above) of a field stripped Type 81. I haven't found one yet. How about one TI?
I've heard the attachment point of the fixed stock is somewhat of a weak point, granted few of us will be smashing the dog heads of those daring to oppose the people's revolution, or the like.
I would not worry about it. Where did you hear it was a weak point? Looks solid to me, why wouldn't it be?
It was on some military forum I think, it's been a long time.
I doubt its delicate exactly but the attachment point appears to be just a matter of sheet metal tabs and screws going into what's probably fairly soft wood.

That's very interesting, and indicates that the rifle was probably made from an early example. The first Type 81s used magazines that were more closely patterned after the Type 63 (aka, Type 68 in many Western sources), which introduced that bolt hold-open and are not compatible with standard AKM magazines. At some point, somebody had the sudden thought, "Hey, we have ∞,000,000 Type 56 magazines that are 98% the same, but now non-compatible..." A bit of redesigning was ordered and many Type 81s are backwards-compatible. The logisitical "wisdom" of having a large number of rifles with externally similar, but non-compatible, magazines in the field with a large number of rifles with externally similar, compatible, magazines is not unusual for the PLA of the day. Until some political/military reforms in the 1990s - and to a certain extent even today - the institutional thinking in China was that "it's easier to do something again than it is to do it right the first time."

You sir, are partially correct.
From Kalashnikov AK47 Series: The 7.62 x 39mm Assault Rifle in Detail By Martin J Brayley:
Typically in weapon development many stages are needed to find the perfect weapon and again the type 2 receiver was not wihtout its own problems. The fitting of the wooden stock into the type 2a receiver proved to be a weak point Some basic attention to the issues and a little redesign work resulted in the type 3 receiver.

A documented issue with earlier AK designs. Coupled with the use (range!) of this firearm in our hands, pretty sure this won't be an issue.
hmmm - probably a bunch of couch commandos. Given that under 10 were ever imported into the USA (as low as 3!) I would take any feedback such as the one you read with a grain of salt.

What? you don't plan on using your rifle for things like climbing on when fully loaded with gear?
To confirm, TI is the only place to preorder at this time?
They are charging full price for a preorder... never seen them do that before.
EMEI is North Sylva's front for the chinese rifles. They're the only supplier of the Type 97's, so I figure they'd be importing their own version at some point.
