Type 81 'M' Reviews, suggestions, upgrades

So, I did some cosmetic overhauling to my underfolder. Sanded down and refinished the wood, brought up the grain significantly and stained it to match my SR. Rounded off the bottom handguard, while still keeping the swell.. i still need to finish the wood with 4-5 coats of polyurethane, hopefully tomorrow.
I also polish the factory finish on all the metal to get rid of the blemeshes and scratches i had, and then gave it a sort of weathered or battle worn finish. I used cold blue to balance it out and give it a bit more depth. It turned out great so far, finish doesnt feel like BBQ paint anymore and much smoother to touch. I really dig the new loo

I will post final results tomorrow or day after..
If anyone is interested i have some time to refinish few more guns in similar fasion... pm me if interested.

That looks really good.. nice work.

A user named yyc.chris on the "other" firearms sales site has created cheek rests for the underfolder that don't get in the way. $35 shipped with mounting hardware is hard to beat and gives you a bit more height when paired with the xfiretactical optic mount found on ebay.

Dmitri, that looks amazing. What was the process you used on the metal?

I'm also interested in how the wood was treated - looks much better than some of the other refinishing jobs on this model. What poly coat did you use at the end, and what stain/method to darken and bring out the grain?

I am also interested in the process. I dont have a ton of experience and would like to know more so I can have some more confidence to attempt something like this.

Same haha... my plan is to try it first on one of my rough spare SKS stocks and if I can get it looking good ill treat the 81 too
