Type 81 Owners Corner !

Are we back on this again?
I still want to know how many rifles were actually bent and how many just had a stock that was a little twisted that made it look worse than it actually was.
Then I want to know how many were returned. Hard to figure out an actual % problem rate when all we have is internet hysteria and the same complaints over and over by the same guys.

Complicating this issue is the lack of certified laserotomer operators...

There are ppl with legitimate gripes, but some of the stuff ppl are whining about make me think they were expecting a Sig sg550, not a slightly improved, stamped steel, ass produced, akm-like rifle.

Most complaints, excepting badly bent receivers, are unfounded whining.

As far as barrel alignment is concerned, 3-4 rifles were legitimately out of specification, the rest can be attributed to parallax/optical illusion, buyer's remorse and handguard alignment.

Thanks that makes sense to me. A bunch of guys PM'd me pics thinking their stuff was off, when I ran the line test on the photos, they all seemed fine.

The only current gripe i'd have with you guys are that some ppl say you haven't shipped out their rfles yet - what's up with that??

I can't speak for others and those that never received an initial rifle but TI is obviously back from holidays and getting things done because my replacement rifle was shipped out today :)

Funny cuz I've had a part sitting at CanPost since last week for pick up from TI and now CanPost is ready to send it back to me if they don't puck it up soon!?!?!?!??!

Time off for Holidays would be my guess. They picked up my return on the 19th and it was sitting there for a few days before they picked it up, add time off for the Holidays in the mix and that could explain your situation.

And what do you consider "legitimately out of specification" ? Your smith said greater than 6mm.

Do you realize at 6mm deviation of a barrel length of 44cm (not including the chamber) translates to 136cm (53") off at a 100m, does this sound normal to you?

Umm...

I think 6mm of muzzle mis-alignment with the receiver flats would be a lot, but...

1) I have not seen ANY rifles out anything like 6mm. The worst I've seen were maybe out 3 or 4mm max.
2) The rifle would not shoot out by even 1mm at 100m, because the sights (front and rear) are both mounted on the barrel. The barrels are straight, what's off is that some trunions are rivetted into the receiver crookedly, or in even rarer cases, the receiver itself is warped.
3) When you have a warped receiver or misaligned trunion, the only issue is uneven wear that COULD (depending on severity) wear out the receiver too early. It has ZERO affect on accuracy.

Why some guys are concerned is that if you try to mod the rifle and add a receiver optics mount, if the trunion is too far out, you could run out of windage adjustment trying to get it sighted in. But it's theoretical because there arent really any T81 receiver mounts out there to install anyhow.

I find it a bit funny people are saying this rifle is overpriced? Just look down south in the US, the cheapest AK on the market is the Romanian WASR10 sells at about $600 to $700USD . The WASR is a very rough rifle , lots of mag wobble, often canted sights, no chrome bore and crap wood , the T81s i have seen are much nicer than a WASR . So we are getting a similar type rifle that's better quality for about the same money, not to mention a rare unique rifle that's unobtainium in the US.

Because twenty years ago you could buy an AK for $400 so after accounting for inflation and the low value of our dollar any more than $500 is overpriced. People do the same thing with the AR180B-2, it was $800 US 15 years ago so any more than $1000 today is somehow overpriced.
It's stupid, let them think what they want, they have the choice not to buy one if they think it's overpriced. The rest of us can enjoy our rifles.

As rediculus as it sounds. It does. The fact that the Chinese still sighted them in means they are indeed within factory spec. The fact that American collectors recall previously imported Chinese AKs as often coming in bent also supports the fact that these bent t81s are within spec. Mine is out by 5mm per foot. Which translates to an impact of roughly 6 feet to the right at 100m in relation to the reciever. BUT the iron being afixed to the barrel are mostly in alignment. So when shooting mine for the first time this week, at 50yrds the windage was bang on, but the elevation was really low. I'm glad I kept the gun regardless of the bend. It's a super pleasent shooter, very nice recoil impulse. I already enjoy shooting it more than my VZ
