Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Are these still available? Is fixed or folder the way to go?

I bought a folder off the EE and love it. Don't regret it one bit. Others love their fixed. It all comes down to preference. Some say the "bent" barrel is more common with the folders. Mine is fairly strait but after shooting it I could care less if its "bent".... I want another one.

So I posted a photoshopped image of a type 81 a while back as a sort of concept photo of some mods I wanted to make to my type 81. Summer kept me busy so the project went to the back burner but I was finally able to make some leaps and bounds.

Plan is to drill and tap a hole on the underside of the front sight block for a set screw, take it to the range and get it on paper before setting it in with Loctite and drilling new holes for the cross pins. Once that's done ill thread the muzzle on and use a crush washer to keep it in place. I took the rifle out and put about 50 rounds through it after I removed the FSB since the gas block is now open on the front but had no issues and the brass seemed to fall in the same place.

The ak-74 stock fit in no problem with some rasp and file work, the simulated tang on the top side was just some sheet metal filed and blued and a screw from the original T81 butt plate.

For the safety im thinking I really like the original so I modified it for a 90 degree throw like an ar. I don't think a real ak safety would work with the short throw and the fact the receiver side isn't flat, so if it finds a home on the rifle it will likely just be for looks and screwed, pinned or tack welded in place.

Looks fantastic!!! I’m trying to do something similar. I’ve got the grenade sleeve off. Took the 2 pins out of my front sight but it seems like it’s stuck real good. Am I missing anything?

This looks awesome. It reminds of an RPK I had a long time ago. I think it would be cool to find a stock flash hider and by pod to do an RPK look alike. The long barrel and receiver would help here.

Yeah, i had to get a shop press (cheap princess auto 6 ton type with a bottle jack) shim against the bayonet lug and top side of the sight (very evenly) so it would press off straight. Theres a few pops and creaks at first but it slides off like a dream with a press.
Remember, the thicker part of the barrel near the muzzle is smaller than the part where the original front sight block rests, you will need to figure out a safe way to temporarily sight it in and then permanently attach it once you have found zero (you can fine tune front sight). I made a very small dimple (only a couple thousands deep) under the barrel for a set screw to sit in through the bottom of the front sight block and then tacked the set screw to the front sight block ( non pressure bearing part) to secure it. You can use blue or green loctite but hammer and weld is communist way! no?

P.S. Some 800+ grit sand paper on edges and rivets gives a nice worn look to this brand new mil surp

Ever consider getting paid to do this for people??

I'd pay you to convert mine just like yours, let me know price and I'll send ya my rifle and emt

Gah Im really torn between doing this mod, or sticking with what I got. Im sure a blow torch and some hammering to the bayo lug would get the sight to move.

You should try, I drove the two FSB cross pins out with a punch and a bench vise. I couldn't get the FSB to move forward until i got a shop press and shimmed it to push off straight, but i didnt want to apply too much heat to the barrel or FSB.

We all bought T81's because of their AK features. Dont waste your money on a Type 81 that nobody heard of until last year. Make the clone and it will be worth more (in canada) than the $600 T81 will be in a few years.

Well, my back ordered Type 81 with tac imports has just arrived so i am guessing the dealers will have them in stock again soon,, it is less than 1000 serial numbers difference than my other type 81

I just ordered one - fixed stock. Pretty excited about it considering the fact that I abstained for so long.

Do they come with a sling?

The one that I got came with a sling, but I am not sure if it was because I pre-ordered, it was packaged great, it good condition and because I pre-ordered i got an extra mag, it looks great

I got mine too. It’s got a 2-3mm bend.

I also found a quick and accurate way to check for a bend: remove the receiver cover, bolt group, and recoilspring. Then sight down the front of the barrel. At the back of the receiver is a round hole that you can see the wood stock thru (or folder thru). Voila!

What are guys doing with their misaligned rifles?

I like it for what it is. I’d rather have a straight one.

I contacted TI thru email yesterday. Haven’t heard back yet.

Was it a fixed stock or a folder? Just wondering
