Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Speaking of the lower handguard, on a somewhat unrelated note, is there any mod to make it quick detach for easy cleaning? I sometimes find water trapped there if not removed.

Yah see that is totally un feasible from a business stand point.

I would suggest naming a price that actually covers your material, time, and a reasonable profit, and then see if there is interest at that price, rather then listening to random commentators who have no idea what Canadian woodworking prices are. Give a finished and unfinished price as well, please.

Yeah, but with VZ furniture if you were really desperate for wood there was always asking American retailers/custom shops if they could help you out. With the 81 we're kinda SOL in that department thanks to the import ban down there.

for better idea on pricing, best to check out ironwooddesigns dot com in the US. they make all sorts of wood furnitures. eg: rpk set is US$344 shipped.

I'd pay that price for a finished RPK-style set. It's a different story when there's a complete finished set vs one unfinished part.

The trouble with working with American retailers is that they have no frame of reference for what a type 81 handguard or stock is without having one around, which is why I'm looking for one everywhere I can think of, so I can get my American contact a template to base it on, and if I get him one I can refer other T81 friends to the same guy.

If a library is open in your area, you should be able to scan a copy of the part, and either print a plastic replica to send, or send the 3d scan design/CAD file to the American carpenter, along with a photo for colour/ grain reference.

The same place charges 118ish USD for a unfinished new production laminate dong lower. It still blows my mind that luckyshot stocks is able to offer wood SKS stocks for less then 200usd. Slave labor must be involved lol ...jokes

He probably makes them on a CNC machine.. finishing still requires labour though

Beautiful guns!

I hope this isn't a thread highjack, but I am (somewhat) thinking of buying a type 81.

I have noticed a lot of the LMG versions for sale on EE. Does anyone know why so many people are deciding to sell theirs, are there problems with them?

Also, is there a big difference between the standard versions and the LMG version? Would I be best to try and get a standard version off EE or is the LMG version good?

Lmg version just shipments in, the standard has not been in for a while, that's why. Buy while you can.

Not sure why the LMG being sold so much on EE, especially when you can still get new rifles at some retailers. The standard version comes in either a folder or a regular fixed stock, with a grenade launching sleeve and a shorter, lighter barrel then the LMG. The LMG has a thicker, longer barrel, a removable bipod, a carrying handle that can be removed permanently if desired, and a "club foot" thicker stock. The LMG is heavier, and its accessories may be a plus or minus, depending on your point of view. The LMG may also be more accurate, with its heavier barrel. Also, a few of the rifles were "bent", where the receiver was askew from the barrel, though you could compensate for this. This issue is not present in LMG production.

Thanks for the responses guys! As Type 81 owners, would you recommend this rifle?

I recommend it to people who understand and accept it's limitations.

From a practical perspective it will do everything you need for a reliable, fun, cool rifle for range time, competition, and hunting inside of 200m

But for the current prices there are better alternatives in terms of accuracy, legal magazine capacity, optics mounting and calibre.

From a cool/fun/interest side of things it's a really interesting rifle to have as it is a rifle of it's own. I love the history and cool factor of it.

My general view is that these are good reliable rifles with a very interesting history which will likely not be being produced a year from now and will never be made again.

From that perspective you'll have to try hard to lose the money you put into it.
