Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I recommend it to people who understand and accept it's limitations.

From a practical perspective it will do everything you need for a reliable, fun, cool rifle for range time, competition, and hunting inside of 200m

But for the current prices there are better alternatives in terms of accuracy, legal magazine capacity, optics mounting and calibre.

From a cool/fun/interest side of things it's a really interesting rifle to have as it is a rifle of it's own. I love the history and cool factor of it.

My general view is that these are good reliable rifles with a very interesting history which will likely not be being produced a year from now and will never be made again.

From that perspective you'll have to try hard to lose the money you put into it.

That sounds fair. What would you say are its biggest limitations?

Which other rifles in that range may be more practical in your opinion?

Bipod and carrying handle add extra weight and make it less comfortable for offhand shooting or shooting from a bench. The stock shape is also designed to aid in shooting prone off the bipod. However, all that extra furniture can be easily removed and the stock replaced with an AKM stock if desired.

Accuracy wise, I get consistent ~3 MOA groups with Russian or Czech surplus (have yet to try Chinese ammo). Most of the rifle users report 4-5 MOA accuracy, so LMG is more accurate due to its barrel. I have a phosphate version that I'm happy with and will likely keep it stock. Hopefully, TI will start selling those no-drill scope mounts and muzzle devices at some point, I'm really looking forward to get them added to the rifle and use it with optics installed.

My observation so far is that the quality of assembly on the LMGs is better then the Rifles. But the overall condition of the parts used on the Rifles is better.

The rifle is obviously lighter...., more compact and better balanced. The accuracy of the LMG appears to be around 1 moa tighter then the rifle version.

Given the choice between the two @ retail price (rifle =1200 vs LMG=1500) i would buy the Rifle version.

did you make a video on your scope mount yet it looks awesome

oh lol I thought that it was the mount in the pic you posted in the fb group

nah, that was just a 3d printed prototype. The real thing will be made from 1018 and 4140 steel. Im getting 3 prototypes produced, one for me ( to build the Tabuk Sniper Clone :D ) , and 2 for "testers". After all 3 prototypes check out, ill do a relatively large production run for the market.

I was thinking, it seems like it would be pretty easy to make a 7.62x39 Dragunov clone from the LMG. Just add the thumb hole stock, longer handguards and remove the bipod.

Even better if Norinco could make a DMR version, better still if they could make one in 7.62x54.

someone has a thread started about the 308 version of the rifle I hope it gets brought in I'm gonna do nasty things to one with a welder

Beautiful guns!

I hope this isn't a thread highjack, but I am (somewhat) thinking of buying a type 81.

I have noticed a lot of the LMG versions for sale on EE. Does anyone know why so many people are deciding to sell theirs, are there problems with them?

Also, is there a big difference between the standard versions and the LMG version? Would I be best to try and get a standard version off EE or is the LMG version good?

Not sure why the LMG being sold so much on EE, especially when you can still get new rifles at some retailers. The standard version comes in either a folder or a regular fixed stock, with a grenade launching sleeve and a shorter, lighter barrel then the LMG. The LMG has a thicker, longer barrel, a removable bipod, a carrying handle that can be removed permanently if desired, and a "club foot" thicker stock. The LMG is heavier, and its accessories may be a plus or minus, depending on your point of view. The LMG may also be more accurate, with its heavier barrel. Also, a few of the rifles were "bent", where the receiver was askew from the barrel, though you could compensate for this. This issue is not present in LMG production.

i ve shot the 3 versions and the foldable not straight (bent) appeals to me and as we can say good luck to find one ... lmg is the only available for now. i doubt we will see again the price the foldalbe or plain ones were before ...

Just saw this while watching a Vice special on Mali. Looks familiar.

Here's 9 Holes Reviews video on the Iraqi Tabuk 24" barrel DMR AK American reproduction. They noted the longer barrel gave it much more consistent performance at longer ranges then standard length AKs. I suspect the performance of a scoped Type 81 LMG with its 20.4" barrel should be closer then the Tabuk then the rifle variant. Murray 3-D, how close does the LMGs scoped performance compare to the Tabuk?
