Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Kinda late to the game here fellas. Only picked up an SE folder a few weeks ago. This thread has been excellent as far as general T81 information goes. Just curious as what what you guys are using for chest rigs/panels/plate carriers? Whatever you're using to carry your mags, can you post it up please and give me some ideas of what's out there that will work well for Type 81 mags.

I think the wood is quite stressed around the pin holes regardless of further stock bracing. Noticed on mine the receiver walls are swelled where the pins were drived thru indicating some level of severe interference. Mine hasn't cracked yet and i do have a long SS screw bracing it. But despite that i do expect to someday see a crack there. Will that effect the retention of the stock to the gun? I doubt it since i figure the SS screw is taking most of the load. Nonetheless appearently the gen2 stocks are not too far out so hopefully it all becomes a non issue for most in the near future.

I'm interested to see how the Gen 2 stocks will turn out. When we finally get them I may use my Gen 1 stock to experiment with some additional reinforcement for my own vanity.

Lol I thought I could post photo's but I guess not yet. I picked up one as my first gun a few weeks ago. Itching to get out and shoot it

edit: how many posts do I need to upload a photo??

You likely have not earned the ability to upload photos directly to the forum. You can instead link to a third party hosting site, like Imgur. Here is a guide on how to paste your image into Imgur, and then get a forum-friendly link to paste into your post: https://www.mineplex.com/threads/unofficial-how-to-add-an-image-to-the-forums-using-imgur.227001/. One additional step I recommend is either pre-shrinking your photos to a forum friendly resolution, or changing the Imgur link by adding a lower case "L" between the name of the image file in the link and its extension; so , for example ImageName.png becomes ImageNaml.jpg ; this automatically drops the resolution to a more forum-friendly one. I would recommend not adding the images to your Imgur profile; that way no one can report or tag them.

The official hiring of Dlask by Marstar to convert R to NR Bren2s had me thinking. What cartridges would give greater oomph at range, and still fit within the Type 81s magazines, only requiring barrel change? I've seen Grendel conversions here. Would 6.5 mm ARC work? Is there any one that would be truly useful in extending the practical range of the Type 81 SR to more Dragnov-esque levels with the fixed stock? And is this something TI could have done locally at a reasonable rate, or would it have to be a factory conversion? Just a thought experiment, fire away!

CGNer Romayama has essentially made both. Pretty neat projects.

IMO for the rechambering to be worth while from a retail/business standpoint it needs to be accompanied by a notable increase in accuracy. Not sure if these sorts of conversions on Type 81s have yielded such... i havent seen any accuracy reports.

Not sure about forum vendors, but Misty Mountain Supplies says they have some chest rigs suitable for Type 81 use. Just search Type 81 on their site for free those and other Type 81 goodies.

Thanks for the help!

Here's my rifle! Using a jmac industries key micro 360 degree brake and folding skeleton tube. My friend in the states is sending me a ak moe-k2 grip in fde which I'm going to modify to fit.

I missed out on the 3barD mounts and TI no longer sells the Herron arms one, so I had to make my own

Nice! Is that a SigmaCo Canada handguard with extension and 1913 stock adapter?

This looks excellent! Did you import the skeleton buffer tube? I was eyeing it myself but looking at the price makes me hesitate!

Yeah they're quite expensive but it was the most low profile folder I could find. I actually just shipped it to Washington and just went across the border to pick it up

Still a work in progress, but pretty happy with out the dong and pistol grip came out.
I'm still playing around with the stock and figuring out what style I want to do for that. The same goes for the upper handguard. I want to find a sacrificial one so that when I drill the rivets out I don't get hit with regret. lol

Wood: white ash
stain: Varathane Black cherry
clear coat: Osmo Polyx clear gloss
