Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Has anyone been able to solve the mystery of the Type 81 PLA scope that clamps onto the reciever and looks identical to this airsoft scope?

I'm still confused by this, as the price range seems to be about the same on both, but I do know that the PLA did indeed use these scopes.
I have one just like it..came with the gun, styrofoam case and a cool cammo soft case with instruction manual written in Chinese.

Was unable to test it out as of yet, since we were just under the Covid lockdown and none of the indoor ranges I have access to allow surplus ammo to be discharged.
There seem to be all kinds of Karen's on standby waiting to rush you with a magnet, as soon as you pull out combloc anything these days...:(
 
First off, page 81! What an auspicious number for this thread.
Secondly, big heckin' shout-out to Murray 3-D once again for everything. If it wasn't for him, I might not have bought a Type81 folder at all. Furthermore, he has inspired me to follow in his bubba-footsteps and I'm pretty sure I just crossed the biggest and most important of Type81 hackjob milestones; namely getting a side plate and mount set up on my gun.
I don't have the best of pictures at the moment, but these should be plenty for now. I'm particularly happy with how low the NPZ side mount I got sits over the receiver, with barely a quart of an inch of clearance in one place. I can even still use the irons with the mount on the gun.
I modified the safety to engage at 90 degrees down (instead of a full 180 degree throw) so as to not get in the way of the mount. Tight fit, when on safe, but it's definitely possible to flip it to and off safe with the mount on.

Those are a nice side mount! Did u have to pivot the mount slightly down in relation to the step in the receiver ? I noticed on my folder not only was the barrel pressed in windage wise to the right. But it was also pressed in angling slightly down.

I can't see why that mount should be any good, especially for that price - and some kind of red dot. I think I will rather drill and tab and then I can put on whatever rail I want but probably going with the Russian side mount scope. If this is what TI will come up with after months of developing, no thank you.

I will first wait and see what they come up with - and also price.

Drilling and taping is a big deal for some since they don't know how to do it, kind of the same as with the SKS handguard pin, if you have done it twice, it is easy. As with the side rail, you can just leave it on, nobody complained about it on the VZ58. I wonder why it was not sold with the side rail on already. Not much forward thinking, as with the "pinning" of the drum.

But at the end of the day, I'd rather stay with my SKS's and mod the heck out the them. Drilling into a $400 gun is different than doing it to a $1,500 one. If the type 81 at least would be a MOA rifle, lol.

They have to call it airsoft.

I had 2 Roni kits for my Glock 17, a real one and an airsoft one, same stuff, seriously.

Still have some aimpoint fakes (not the cheap ones for $30), they work amazing - bought both on ebay, one was $100, the other one $150 and I bought them because many people bought them and really liked them - and even resold them as real ones, lol.

The elevation of the mount is pretty much exactly in line with the 200m elevation angle on the gun, which I set as accurately as I could. There's a very slight right cant on the barrel, though (half a degree) but I didn't adjust the plate on that. If I planed to use ye olde east bloc optics I might sand down the spacer plate under the mounting plate a bit to better follow the barrel angle, but I'll leave it as is for now and simply crank the windage on the optic I got in the mail.
 
its easy to guess what the pricing on the No drill T81 mount would be. the AK master mount sells for US$80-95 just for the side mount and screws so say add a premium for the T81 and currency conversion, you would be looking at C$125 - $150.

Thats good to know, when i side mounted my folder, the optic was going to be about 60moa above POI if i drilled the mount parallel to the receiver step. For cosmetic reasons that would be more then what id want the FFP optic to correct for..... Yet i notice on my LMG the step seems to run fairly parallel with the barrel. Im in the final design stages of my "Type 81SA master mount" . Its looking like ill make one for people who have "relatively straight" Type 81SAs..... and possibly later depending on demand a model for "visibly bent" Type 81SAs. Cant make a mount that works for both and yet still looks good haha

that was not the idea of a moa rifle ... we re paying the canadian NR tax ... but the folder are still a great tool and way better than any sks d ...cant wait the mount to try some good shooting.

Very nice. I found a POSP side mounted scope in my treasure chest today and I think it will be perfect for the LMG.

El cheapo calipers tell me 15.79mm for the first 90mm behind the gas block, and 17.41mm from the handguard retainer plate to the front trunnion.

We managed to get some time to modify & play around with a T81, so here it is: Hogue AK grip, a modified Zhukov AK forend, Hical slotted handguard, Modified Magpul AK mags. We will tinker some more, but here is what we have come up with so far.....We will modify our AK mags for you or send yours to us to modify. Let us know what you think!

How did you modify that hogue grip to work. I just got one and am a bit confused...
 
I wanted to pick up a short 10 round AK mag and do the modifications so my type 81 would be easier to shoot off of a bench. I haven't been able to find any 10 round AK mags in any store near me. I decided to stop into my LGS on the way home from work one day last week and see what they had for mags, low and behold I found one lonely 10 rd mag that was labelled as a 7.62x39 norinco m14/m305 mag. It was almost identical to the type 81 mag and with a little modification with a dremmel similar to the AK mag mods I was able to get it to fit very well. Went to the range to test it out the other day and no feeding issues at all.
 
This thread should be stickied... the Type 81SA is now basically the second most popular 7.62x39 rifle in Canada. But yet there are no stickys addressing it haha
