Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Finally (almost) finished, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I just have to swap the optic-ready pins out for the normal set and install the left-side 90-degree safety tomorrow.

Looks great!
Wish i could find a rail.. im waiting for another users handguard prototype to come into a production run.

Where do you get the 90 degree safety?

It's really easy to convert the factory safety to a 90-degree throw. You just have to file a flat on the appropriate spot where the drum of the safety intersects the flat spring that holds it all in place. The only problem is that forward is still 'fire', and up is 'safe'. It really should be the other way around, like an AR. I'm hoping someone produces one with AR-style positions someday...

Hi there sorry for the late reply

Thank you! I stripped it by sanding along the grain with 80 grit sand paper. Using good brand name sand paper helps so much.
I then smoothed it out with 150,320,600 and then stained with 1 coat of varathane espresso, and then 4 coats of Minwax red mahogany. Then used a high gloss wipe on poly by Minwax. Sanded with 600 between coats to get ultra smooth finish.

I was so happy there was some decent grain underneath that was being hidden by that red paint lol

your hard work shows, looks good so can you tell what kinda of wood it is? the original blonde was on beech. what in the red?

yup, position the safety pointing up and file the shaft where it touches the reddish spring, i used a dremel disc first then a hand file.

Hey!

An update for everyone is that the first run of 50 are being cut as I type this. I'm not leaving anyone behind -

The handguard design has changed a touch, mostly around extending that picatinny as far as I could.

Ignore that darkened out bit... Just a future idea for anyone who would want it.

Are these still prototypes that you're testing? If so, when will they be available for purchase? That darkened out bit at the front looks awesome.

Don't tell anyone but the second thing I'd like to release is an ambi 90deg safety where the vertical position is also the fire position, and the horizontal one is safety (like an AR-15).

I've now used my printed prototype across a thousand rounds or so, and I occasionally test it by pulling the trigger hard while the weapon is on safe, seems fine! I'd prefer to release a steel one rather than a nylon one though.

Very simple part, I've just got to justify it to myself.. The headaches involved in having it made then selling things!

dont worry, its simple to do but too many are afraid to touch the selector without further guidance. glad to hear you prefer steel, it has to be steel, not even aluminum bcos of wear. i hope you make lots of money for your headache.

Reddit user AlbertaNumba1 has discovered a GSG handguard can friction fit as a lower handguard for the Type 81. Like an AK-12 plastic handguard, it probably won't hold zero for a visible or IR laser, but it should fine for an M-Lok QD swing swivel, flashlight and/or bipod. https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/u9v3tu/made_an_incredibly_stupid_but_interesting/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb

Here's AlbertaNumba1's pictures in-thread:

Fits on tight with friction. Could use original screw for back on handguard but front end no ideas

Thanks!

The red/blue have been prototyped, tested, and are in production set to be released soon while the darkened out portion is still in testing and could be available later as an addon if people are interested (very similar to how Zenitco offer their extended handguards).

Great to hear! I, and pretty much every type 81 rifle owner thanks you for your hard work! Definitely put me down for one!

Awesome sauce. Would love one. Any idea what they might weigh/what the pricing would be yet?

Awesome. I'll be buying. Any chance you can make a good aluminum stock adapter for a fixed stock rifles? Either AR-tube or Picatinny?

I'd love to get one of these for the upper and use it with a wood lower handguard, just for mounting a light so there would be no need for for it to hold zero. Lets say I used the upper without the lower, would the area where the upper overlaps the lower still completely enclose the piston area, or would the screw areas just be small tabs? I'm guessing most people would want to use both the upper and lower, but a few people might just want to use the upper by itself, so I'm hoping for cover.

I don't think the upper hand guard would hold zero without the lower hand guard.
