nice outcome.
Where do you get the 90 degree safety?
Looks great!
Wish i could find a rail.. im waiting for another users handguard prototype to come into a production run.
Hi there sorry for the late reply
Thank you! I stripped it by sanding along the grain with 80 grit sand paper. Using good brand name sand paper helps so much.
I then smoothed it out with 150,320,600 and then stained with 1 coat of varathane espresso, and then 4 coats of Minwax red mahogany. Then used a high gloss wipe on poly by Minwax. Sanded with 600 between coats to get ultra smooth finish.
I was so happy there was some decent grain underneath that was being hidden by that red paint lol
It's really easy to convert the factory safety to a 90-degree throw. You just have to file a flat on the appropriate spot where the drum of the safety intersects the flat spring that holds it all in place.
Hey!
An update for everyone is that the first run of 50 are being cut as I type this. I'm not leaving anyone behind -
The handguard design has changed a touch, mostly around extending that picatinny as far as I could.
Ignore that darkened out bit... Just a future idea for anyone who would want it.

Don't tell anyone but the second thing I'd like to release is an ambi 90deg safety where the vertical position is also the fire position, and the horizontal one is safety (like an AR-15).
I've now used my printed prototype across a thousand rounds or so, and I occasionally test it by pulling the trigger hard while the weapon is on safe, seems fine! I'd prefer to release a steel one rather than a nylon one though.
Very simple part, I've just got to justify it to myself.. The headaches involved in having it made then selling things!
Reddit use AlbertaNumba1 has discovered a GSG handguard can friction fit as a lower handguard for the Type 81. Like an AK-12 plastic handguard, it probably won't hold zero for a visible or IR laser, but it should fine for an M-Lok QD swing swivel, flashlight and/or bipod. https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/u9v3tu/made_an_incredibly_stupid_but_interesting/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb

Thanks!
The red/blue have been prototyped, tested, and are in production set to be released soon while the darkened out portion is still in testing and could be available later as an addon if people are interested (very similar to how Zenitco offer their extended handguards).
Thanks!

I'd love to get one of these for the upper and use it with a wood lower handguard, just for mounting a light so there would be no need for for it to hold zero. Lets say I used the upper without the lower, would the area where the upper overlaps the lower still completely enclose the piston area, or would the screw areas just be small tabs? I'm guessing most people would want to use both the upper and lower, but a few people might just want to use the upper by itself, so I'm hoping for cover.
