Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Shame they arnt bringing in normal ones. Im definitely not in under folder appreciation group lol But I guess props to TI for trying to cover all the desires in Canada. Side folders, fixed, Blued, Parkerized, LMG, Red Furniture, SVD....

any idea when you'll have more side rails in stock? I've been checking every day since christmas :p

Yeah, normal ones (fixed or side folder) would be ideal. Seeing as most people convert LMGs and SRs into a more "rifle" kinda setup anyways. Under folders look cool but if it's anything like a shotgun under folder, it sucks balls to shoot, haha.

How well does his AK safety adapter work?

pretty well, but Id want the over travel system that he built into the set. Right now the safety moves up and down well, and its hard to go too far in either direction but I want more positive feedback at either end

One thing is for sure, no more SR. They will be the rare bird in the future. I think an underfolder is very easy to accomplish but I agree with Murray. I think both underfolder and folder are not exactly a shooter's choice but more of a cool factor one. I am sure there will be lots of demand for that one.

There was enough demand in the States that Zastava brought over an AK under-folder there. It will probably do reasonably well, and hopefully the rear trunion can be modified to accept an adapter for a buffer tube or Zhukov stock for those who want a more comfortable stock.

I really like the SR as a shooter, it did get a trigger job to cut the pull weight in half and smooth it out as out of the SE, and a couple LMG it had the worst trigger out of the bunch. Go figure.
They were an absolute steal at 1k, I definitely should have bought 2 or 3.

The underfolder would be *my* choice as a shooter compared to the fixed stock variants. While the fixed stock give you the look you want I found the geometry especially uncomfortable.

I'll take having no cheek weld with the folding variants as opposed to having to cram my face against the cutout in the stock with my shooting glasses almost touching the back of the receiver.

Maybe I could rig a full AK stock on there easily enough?

I just received a new T81 SR from Prophet River and have a couple of questions.

I'm sure all this info is buried in this thread somewhere and I'll go dig around in it but for now-

What's the best bipod option for this rifle these days?

What's the best optic mounting option? I want to put a fairly standard 2-10x/3-9x or similar scope on it.

It came with an extra stock. I somewhat recall reading that some of the original stocks were breaking but is this a replace immediately sort of thing or wait to see if I got lucky and my stock may not break thing?

The attachable cheekrest that came with it looks fairly simple to put on but when I tried, the latch wasn't quite long enough. Is there some trick to it or do I need to do some carving of the stock?

I want to put a red dot on my "standard" T81 that came off the first shipment. What's the best mount for that?

I'm not looking for massive changes like an aluminum handguard or anything. I want them to stay as close to stock as possible in appearance.

Thanks!

I can't post links, since its to non forum vendors, but here's some options. It is out of stock but 3 Bar D Productions has a reversible M-Lok bipod mount that uses the lower a different screw in the lower handguard attachment socket to attach the adapter to the bottom of the lower handguard. You don't have to replace the first stock immediately, and you can find some modifications using screws in the forum and on YouTube that may prevent it from cracking, if you want to keep the fixed stock as a pure backup. You can get full length, forward biased, and rear biased 1913 rails from Tactical Imports, along with a mounting plate. Be careful which you choose to match your optics location, as if the optic is long enough to sit over the ejection port, spent casings can bounce off the optic and back into the action. You can get alternate mounting plates from 3 Bar D Productions and Sigmaco Canada that allow you to use AK specific optics or AK 1913 rails from third parties. Make sure you select the "optic ready" rails, as the SR has the optic-ready threaded side pins already installed. If your Type 81 folder does not come with the threaded pins, you can get the kits that come with the pins from SigmaCo Canada and 3 Bar D Productions, or purchase the side rail and threaded pins from Tactical Imports with the match 1913 rail. There used to be a reversible red dot mount that used the site block from Mcwistle, but the website is dead, so those may no longer be in production; its a pity, as this allowed use of the iron sites and was the least intrusive optic mounting option.

These are also available if your just want to mount a red dot. Very sleek and light. Has rmr, holosun, dpp, and doctor footprints aswell as milk slot to fit a 3 slot mlok/pic rail. Those mounts and screws listed above are overpriced and over kill for a red dot. TI wants 19.99 for the screws, the others seem to never have stock and they want 60-120 for two screws.

For just a dot these are really nice, $90 for the mount, screws from TI are 39.99 to your door. Can easily field strip without removing mount. Sits low and tight to the receiver, don’t even notice it really. Not like the other warts. Lol at the mcwhistle mount, #### that mounts set up for those Burmese neck stretching women

Thanks I'll try to look at them.

PS you can post partial links here...Like post the link but put a space in it like ht tps://website.com

That's a perfect mount for a red dot for my standard T81's. Will be way better than the factory sights. It's crazy that good iron sights have existed for so long (think of how great M1 Garand sights are) yet decades later so many military rifles were still crippled by crap. I guess it's cost...

Do those mounts need any extra mounting screws? or are they included? I'll probably attach a Vortex Sparc AR to it, they are sort of my medium range red dot default these days.

It came with 3 sets of screws for mounting optics but not to the screws for the mount itself.

A single slot of mlok for a small piece of rail

Fasteners made by a fastener facility vs CNC'ed shoulder bolts, the latter is a more expensive and inefficient way to produce them... but also a superior mechanical design. Id agree that the Ebay mount is an decent solution for someone wanting a minimalist setup. Its honestly what I thought TI's next gen "1913" mount was going to be.
