Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

My underfolder has a bit of play... Anyone try this to tighten it up?

Depends how much play you have on your UF. In the video, he said "a quarter of an inch" which is like 6-7mm. That's huge. On my UF it is about 1-2mm. I think that such a small amount of play cannot be completely eliminated. A better video for understanding how the folding mechanism works on the M type is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpPIdFSLULc&t=391s.

Agreed & I don't think I've seen a single other person post that they've worked this Wizardly crayon magic on their T81?

I’ve actually been doing this for years with a lot of different rifles
I don’t use a crayon though I bought some kind of white waxy paint type pencil (markal b) from Gregg’s
Used it on serial numbers to make them more legible plus like you did on the t 81 did the numbers for the sight and the gas setting numbers as well
I originally did this trick on my mg34 years ago to bring out the ser numbers/ plant manufacturer code and the dirty birds so they were easily seen it’s a great mod and it works great!

I followed the tutorial by gnutzguy on YouTube & paracord wrapped my underfolder. :ar15:

If you do paracord wrap yours, my only advice is: use 12' of paracord, & it doesn't have to be as tight as he says in the video... ;)

Has anyone verified that the new mlock handguard rail holds zero after being removed for cleaning? Wonder if a forward mounted red dot would work, or it's really just made for accessories and not sights

I still can't figure out how to post pictures on here, but wanted to mention that I got a "Zenitco" style handguard from Delta-Dynamics that may have crossed your radar if you are on Facebook, and it's excellent. Much more comfortable than the stock one, feels solid, and the included storage compartment fits the cleaning brush (as you know, storage on the UF is non-existent, and for some reason the cleaning brush doesn't even come inside the tool case). Very happy at $40 plus flat rate shipping. Received in 2 days after ordering from AB to BC.

I'm working on it...heres a teaser:

That's roughly 4ish moa? Shot with a red dot @ 100m? That's good shooting and very decent for a T-81, in my experience.

Those are 3/4" x 3/4" black target patches, and I guess the range is actually 100 yards not meters, so yeah 3-4moa.

So Cole's notes on the TI handguard holding zero sufficiently to mount and run a red dot? No bueno.

I suspect that the tiny fasteners are not up to the job of securing the top of the hand guard in place for repeated firing cycles - even locktited.
I'd be interested in seeing a high speed slow motion video, but I imagine its like watching a cowboy trying to ride a bull.

The below photo shows a 10 round group (circled in red), followed by taking the top rail off to simulate cleaning.
I fired another 10 rounds on an other target with the irons, then put the rail back on and fired another 10 round group (circled in blue).

It is probably worth pursuing further (maybe drilling and tapping this rail and hand guard for larger, more robust fasteners), but as it stands I wouldn't recommend buying one thinking it is going to perform from the go.

That looks pretty good, I'm thinking about building something similar. Can you post a pic of it with the stock folded?
