Type 97 in 7.62x39...? Any reason they don't exist??

It took my a little while to sort out my Puma.
The answer seems to be opening up the large gas port with a 9/64" drill bit.
And lots of G96 spray.

This is part of an article I am currently writing. (Originally for Small Arms Review magazine, but they just informed me that they no longer want it. So it has now been offered to Calibre magazine. Watch for it!)

On this particular sample gun, it cycled fine with heavy slug loads on the small setting, but would not run reliably on light trap loads or even 3 dram equivalent field loads on the large hole.
Even after manually cycling it 500 times (Yes, I counted.) and running over 100 rounds through it, it still experienced FTE and FTF about 25% of the time.
After applying a good dose of G96 on all the moving parts, and gently (finger powered only) cleaning up the large gas hole on the gas plug with a 9/64” twist drill, the gun cycled perfectly.

One of the biggest complaints was the mag release. The type 95 is a rock and lock magazine isn't it? So by running that style in the type 97 would likely make the controls a little more appealing.

I would throw money at that thing...

Feeds pretty good for us 90% of the time.
if you load the mags and pay attention to whats going on the 10% shrinks a bit...

Sorry for the hijack op.

I would be down for one as well ;)

Just because the XCR will feed a 5 and sometimes even a 10 round mag doesn't mean it works well. There is a reason the AK mag is shaped like a banana and why some AR manufacturers are building dedicated lowers to run 7.62x39 through AK mags in the AR platform. Tapered case cartridges need a curved magazine to feed correctly.
7.62x39 feeds like crap from an AR mag and the only reason so many Canadians think it's a great idea is because of our stupid mag capacity limits. If you try to fill a 30 round AR mag with 7.62x39 it will feed like crap even with a correct follower.

If you really want to run 30 cal through AR mags try 300 Blackout. Everything a x39 can do and much much more.
Sure nothing compares to the x39 for price but it's a crappy dirty cartridge that most ranges won't even let you shoot any more unless you find non steel core ammo. Sure take it out in the bush and target shoot, but if you want to hunt with it then it loses all it's price advantage when you have to buy soft point ammo.

Wanna blast x39? Just buy a rifle that was designed around it. Plenty of semi auto options out there for less than the price of a T97.

Could you actually rock the mag in with the pistol grip there? Seems physically impossible, if you have to seat the front of the mag in, at an angle, and then rotate it in rearwards...
