Hi Guys - I thought I would post some pics of some Type 97 optic options. I got a loan of some more optics to test the cheek weld (thanks Shawn357:cheers:). All pics use my see through scope mount.

My current set up: Aimpoint Micro. I feel this offers the best cheek weld, a bit higher than a regular cheek weld. A Doctor optic would work well.

I also mounted a Surefire flashlight in an off-set mount (I'm thinking of getting a bunch of these offset mounts made if there is interest).

Aimpoint COMPM3 Clone and low mount. This is a decent option. This is of course higher than the micro and is more of a low cheek weld. It wasn't uncomfortable, just higher. I believe you can get an even lower mount for the COMP as well.

Trijicon Type Clone. This mount was VERY high. More of a high chin weld. It worked but was not ideal.

Bushnell Red Dot. This one mounted almost as low as the Micro. It's a real good option for those on a budget. (note: the scope mount in this pic is an airsoft mount)

I tried mounting my 5-15x Bushnell in low mounts just for shizzles but the front bell was just millimeters too large for it to mount flush. The front bell hit the front sight hood (not an issue for the non-restricted T97). Of note though is eye relief - you will probably need to use a rail extension / cantilever to get proper eye relief. The T97 has a relatively short LOP for a bullpup. My see through mount is also 11 grooves instead of the standard 13 as was necessitated by the design. Even with a 13 groove rail you would still need an extension - Fab Arms carries one by Yankee hill.

Hope this helps a bit.

excellent post !!

as far as the side mount is concerned i think it would be nice to have since forward light mounting is a pain on this design.

Anymore optic mount pics from other T97 owners?

this is a great post. It's a great way to get an idea of what I want in optics. I'm thinking a Burris fast fire. Trijicon ACOG looks OK, but a little pricey for me. Chinese scope on a chinese rifle seems adequate.

I've been getting some questions via PM regarding the use of magnified optics with the T97. Here's one of my responses that I think will help to clear it up:
Hi **** - The problem is keeping your eye far enough away from magnified optics. If you look in my optics post note how far back the Trijicon clone sits. It's about the same as the rear sight. With magnified optics they tend to sit farther back than the Trijicon. So you are actually too close to the scope. That's why to use a magnified optic you may need a rail extension. It's hard to explain without actually seeing it but the LOP of the T97 is fairly short, so your eye sits quite close to the rear sight. If you go through some of the threads and look at some photos of PLA solders and the Type 97/QBZ 95 note how close their eyes are to the rear sight. Then I think you'll get what I mean.

Here's some links to pics that illustrate my point:

How would a 'Z' mount work - with the optics forward of the rail?

I don't think a z mount or duck bill would be very stable. I've answered this before in another thread but the Z mount was designed for the old style carry handle that was used on the AR. It mated to an all aluminum surface. The handle of the T97 is plastic and the proprietary rail on the T97 is comparatively small. I just think all that weight out front with nothing to stabilize it but a small mating surface and a plastic handle would not make for a very solid mount.

Just my two cents....

I really can't visualize what to do with mine until it gets here...although one idea garnered from your idea of mounting a light is to add a rail on the flat of the right side of the gun's furniture for attaching lighting options low and out of the way...

Board member Nemo did exactly that to mount a Laser. There's a pic of it in black rifle section I believe.

Edit: Found the pics...
That's my OTAL laser!;)
I only put rail on one side!!

Any one have any experiance with the NCS_D4RGB reticule sight. Fab Sports lists them at 69.95.

It will be very high but should work OK. A buddy of mine had one of these (didn't get it from fab sports but it looked the same). The reticule broke in less than one range session. You get what you pay for. Go for an inexpensive Bushnell, at least you get a pretty good warranty.

Edit: don't get me wrong, this is not a knock against Fabsports or their products. But I've bought so many inepensive red dots and scopes and have always been disappointed in them. I've wasted a lot of money on low quality optics. I don't waste my money anymore and buy something that will last.

Thanks Clobb for the excellent photos of the optics mounted on the Type 97. These give me a good idea of what to buy as far as optics are concerned. I think that the Doctor would be good. The lower the better. IMHO

I got one as a scout scope on my SKS and it works great, and it would be perfect for the 97 in my opinion too. I recently picked up a Burris fast fire($250). It was a little out of my price range but I love how small it is. Definetly going on the 97.;)

A Burris Fastfire would probably be pretty good on that high carry handle. Maybe an Aimpoint Micro too. What's the best place to find these here in Canada, price wise?

Also, anyone here have experience with the Burris Fastfire? Looks to have a nice wide field of view. Is it rugged enough, despite it's small size?

I'd like to get a red dot with a 2 or 3 MOA dot. My thinking is that you should get reasonable accuracy out to 100 yards with the T97, yet still have the advantage of wide field of view and fast target aquisition. Can anyone recommend a red dot that has a low profile and is in the 200 price range?

I think the Nikon Monarch goes down to 1 MOA and is about 250 USD, but haven't been able to find much online about it locally.
