Thought I would post about the project I have been working on over the summer. One of the biggest negatives of the Type 97 is the optic mounting system. It's a non standard rail that was designed for a proprietary optic.

There are adapter picatinny mounts available (airsoft) but they cover the iron sights. I was able to design a mount that allows the use of iron sights while still being able to mount an optic. I've tested it on both the short and long barreled T97's and it works well. It wasn't as easy a project as I was hoping and cost me several hundred dollars to complete. I am trying to get some more mounts made in quantity, but it's a slow process.

Here's a crappy video and a couple of equally crappy photos. Regarding the video, I was by myself when I made it so you can't really see the rounds hitting the gong, you can hear a faint "slap" of the gong a fraction of a second after each shot. I wanted to test how solid the mount was so I put five rounds on the 75 yard gong, bashed the mount with a rubber mallet (hard enough to release the bolt LOL:D) and then put 5 more rounds on the gong (all hits). I did this test several times; the scope retained zero and the mount didn't budge . I hope to make a better vid next weekend. The mount works well and is very solid. It didn't shoot loose over 120 rounds...

Go easy on me, I know the video is crappy.

Looking through the rear sight.

A pic of the mallet to prove I wasn't giving it love taps...the multiple marks are from hitting the mount:

Cool stuff man! What about pics of the targets?

Sorry missed your post...I never really thought to take pics of my test targets. I did test this way though and the zero remained fine. I thought if I could get the video to show me hitting the gong that would be proof enough...next time I'm out I'll get some before and after targets.

Clobb has been using my rifle for fitting tests as well. He is a stand up guy and doing all potential 97 owners a great service here.

The mount looks good and solid. I hope he can pull this off.

Was thinking about this as the rail project progresses. For those that want to mount optics this is the procedure for cleaning the T97 gas piston on the longer barrel rifle (taken from Jack Brock from my other T97 thread). Since mine is a shorty the process is slightly different. For the regular 97 you have to leave the carry handle mounted and remove the bottom pistol grip portion of the rifle...easy to do with a push pin...

Greetings Clobber,
Heres what I have done in the way of removing my gas piston retainer (Regulator), gas piston and gas piston spring. Yes you depress the gas regulator and it does not matter on mine go all the way left or right but before you can remove the piston and spring and if a rail or scope is mounted other than the little throw lever on the Chinese scope which is pressed tightly against the carrying handle when cammed in place, you can remove the take down pin that holds the pistol grip trigger assembly and carrying handle then MOVE (slide) the carrying handle upper, Back a Half Inch to clear the gas regulator for removal either left or right that way it will slide along the underside of a rail. Then you have the clearance to rotate the regulator (retainer) all the way Left or right and pull it out.
The piston was filthy and need a Appropriate chop stick (Cleaning rod) pressed into the chamber to free it up as there was a lot of carbon(no shaking here) and out she came. I'm glad you asked as I did not want to have to re-zero my optics with each cleaning. I cleaned the piston dropped in the spring the piston and returned the regulator then slid the carrying handle forward and wala. Done like dinner. i suppose you want a picture?? This is actually good as I had no manual with mine. I hope this helps others like you said Clobber.

This project is progressing. I'm just awaiting production availability at the CNC shop. I'm having 20 made up for the first batch. I've also altered the design that so that it is even more stable to rearward blows. Though, the video shows it is quite strong in its current config.

Some Teaser Pics:

I just got a partial mount back from the CNC shop. I couldn't wait to get it home to see how it fit on the T97's rail! It's not finished yet of course, as the whole top half of the rail has to be machined, but the bottom half works perfect. So far, so good!!!

The mount is made of 7075 aluminum and will wear a Type III HCA finish.

I don't want to show more detail just yet;)

Got the final sample back today. The rail is all but done except for the anodizing. The CNC shop said it was a real pain in the A$$ to do the rail..:D. They had to buy some special tooling just to get it right:D. I rushed home so I could test it on my 97 and it worked out better than I had hoped. The new mounting system (I changed it slightly since the first prototype) works great and the mount locks up ROCK solid. Hope to have final order in by the first week of January. More teaser pics:

Good job Clobb, like I said before, I'll take one, I just wonder when my 97 will be here, I'm starting to think the mount might get here first!
