My Norinco Type 97 Shorty - Range Report Post # 80!!!!

Interesting...I need to take mine apart later tonight...but I think there's a pretty neat difference there to note.

I took mine apart tonight to show a cool little difference between the shorty and the longer version, not only is the piston much shorter, but there is no piston return spring. It's a floating piston, it strikes the operating rod/bolt carrier and cycles the action without being returned to position by it's own spring. I assume it just returns to position by the main spring putting pressure on the operating rod/bolt carrier. Kinda neat! Also, Jack how does the piston come out of yours? On mine you rotate the gas regulator all the way to the right and pull it out than you give the rifle a little shake and the piston drops out. How do you remove yours? Do you have to remove the optic and carry handle t0 do it? Or can it be removed by just removing the gas regulator? The reason I ask is for those that plan to use a picatinny rail. If you have to remove the hand guard to clean the piston then you will have to remove the rail, unless you can get at the piston by removing the pistol grip/trigger which is simple.

Here's some pics of my piston...

Gas Piston 97A

Greetings Clobber,
Heres what I have done in the way of removing my gas piston retainer (Regulator), gas piston and gas piston spring. Yes you depress the gas regulator and it does not matter on mine go all the way left or right but before you can remove the piston and spring and if a rail or scope is mounted other than the little throw lever on the Chinese scope which is pressed tightly against the carrying handle when cammed in place, you can remove the take down pin that holds the pistol grip trigger assembly and carrying handle then MOVE (slide) the carrying handle upper, Back a Half Inch to clear the gas regulator for removal either left or right that way it will slide along the underside of a rail. Then you have the clearance to rotate the regulator (retainer) all the way Left or right and pull it out.
The piston was filthy and need a Appropriate chop stick (Cleaning rod) pressed into the chamber to free it up as there was a lot of carbon(no shaking here) and out she came. I'm glad you asked as I did not want to have to re-zero my optics with each cleaning. I cleaned the piston dropped in the spring the piston and returned the regulator then slid the carrying handle forward and wala. Done like dinner. i suppose you want a picture?? This is actually good as I had no manual with mine. I hope this helps others like you said Clobber.

Great to know - I was wondering about that, it would suck to have to re-zero the optics every time. My piston gets filty as well, I just use a wire brush and G96 to clean it. I also use a brush on the piston tube.

Yeah did the same, a brass brush and hop's no. 9 cleaned it up good. I like this little fun arm, my wife was shooting it really well too. She liked how it balanced, she's a south paw who has always shot right handed and she found working the arm was pretty easy once she got used to it. I can't wait for the non restrict to get here.

Hi Jack,

I am going to reload for T97. My question is: Can I still reload the ejected shell? ( You mentioned there is a dent on the middle of the shell)

You know I don't really know about that, maybe one of the other members could chime in and the would be able to tell you weather it could be done when you full length size it or not. I can't say as I load for bolt actions and revolvers only and never have tried on a case that had a ding in the middle. Clobber does your brass show the same indentation?? Good question, I only run factory stuff through my semi's.
Sorry buddy.

Come Sept. I will be putting my 97 on the market due to me purchasing the non restrict. Optics will also be part of the package. It's gonna hurt!! The wife in her womanly wisdom asked why I needed another one and i replied that god gave me a right hand and a left to fill, so I need one for each. Lol !!!!-- Do you think she bought it?? I will not put much more ammo through this as I will save the 5.56 that I have for the other one. Anyhow thats the plan Stan.
Jack
