I have gone through several pages looking for an answer to this question. Can the Type97 be converted for a left hand shooter? the best info i can find is that it throws the brass on a forward angle from the ejection port, but will it clear the face/arm/shoulder of a lefty?

links, or any of the unfortunate few that had a chance to shoot the originals rifles only to lose them...please chime in.

Type 97 is not really lefty compatible. The chinese invented the Type 95, in part, to allow for right-handed communist soldiers to be able to use the rifle left-handed if tactics so dictated. They are not planning on dropping the commie insistence on converting all lefties into conformist rightys. That would just be counter-revolutionary.

From world.guns.ru:

During 2010-2011 PLA has adopted an improved version of the Type 95 / QBZ-95 rifle, known as Type 95-1 / QBZ-95-1. This rifle includes several important improvements, based on the field experience with original rifles. Polymer stock is made stronger, barrel is mproved to provide longer service life and better accuracy. Pistol grip and trigger aguard are redesigned, and selector / safety switch is moved to much more comfortable position, right above the pistol grip. Other improvements include addition of the bolt hold-open device and gas regulator. Ejection port is moved forward slightly to ensure that spent cases are ejected forward and to the right, allowing for left-hand shooting if necessary.

wow, bullpups are awesome...

Bullpups are the way of the future, and they only get better with each design. Hanging back in the past, muttering that the 1911, the ak47 and the ar15 can't be beaten, is silly, and makes the mutterer look the same. An innovative person would see the current shortcomings of design as a challenge, a complainer will just whine that there are shortcomings. Thanks for coming out.

Thanks for trying to play up a piss poor design. I believe the issues of bullpup rifles have already been discussed. Let me recap for those who memory issues. Fixed LOP, poor ergonomics, not left hand friendly, chamber beside face(not a great idea) limited rail space for accessories and/or control and no real benefit of the compact size and they're made by Norinco. They sure do look cool...

Yep, bullpups suck:

Those all suck? Ok.

Yet all these militaries and many more, are focusing on the design. Perhaps your pearls of wisdom are wasted on swine like us, and you should contact all the countries using or developing bullpups, (that means most countries, start alphabetically) and stop them before they waste anymore money. Good on you!

I'm sorry did you have some valid info to contribute? Perhaps some evidence to contradict the above mentioned downfalls of bullpup rifles?

Nobody said that bulpups were perfect, yet. Hell, look at an RFB, spits the spent shells out the front, makes it lefty good. Has plenty enough rail space for what is needed. Short enough to maneuver easily, while still maintaining the length of a full barrel. So all it needs is an adjustable stock (maybe with pieces you fit in like the Magpul SGA stock?), and better reload ergo's? Say a mag release button ahead of the trigger (like an AR) and training to remember to put a new mag behind the pistol grip instead of the front. If bullpups were so bad (like you seem to be suggesting) then why are a bunch of European nations as well as Asian nations going that route?

At least I will be able to take my bullpup to the outback anytime I want ;) Hows that Government approved range treating you AR guys?

And Fight: Is this one considered a bullpup or something else being loaded on the top?

Bullpup bolt actions are a different breed.

The AUG is the best of the lot but still suffers all the issues I listed above
The RFB is a commercial rifle that has not and will not be adopted by any serious users
The FN 2000 is a joke
As is the P90 as no one of value is running them. I'm aware US Secret Service have used them, but they're switching out as they suck terminally.
Tavor suffers the same issues as the others
The South African Vector is untested and again, suffers the same issues as the others
The FAMAS is outdated with its fixed carry handle. Making the insane mechanical offset of the bullpup design even worse.

Hey, how many of those rifles can be shot from the left shoulder without dumping brass in the users mouth? What about short people or winter gear and those fixed LOP stocks? Haven't heard an answer yet regarding these issues.. But they look cool.

And the M-16 must suck too, cause in Vietnam Soldier were trading up for Ak's... If I recall the M-16 had/has issues too.

Poor Ergonomics?

Maybe yes, maybe no? I can say however when I fired my friend's RFB that the balance was amazing. I could picture myself hitting a standard 200 yard target from the standing position all day long, which is something I cannot say for any of the other rifles I've shot.

Bullpups have limitations just like most other rifles, but I'm sure that any CGNr who gets one will also have more conventional guns to fall back on should they so desire!
