Uclulet FN removes chief and bans him from hunting privileges

It happens everywhere. Lake Nipissing is pretty much fished out and none of it is for sustenance. All retail sales. These two were caught (chiefs daughter and her friend,) then the NFN issued a moratorium on netting during the spawning season (when they still net, killing tens of thousands of breeding fish,) when fish are laying eggs. Guess how well that worked. They still netted 20,000 walleye in breeding season. That does not include the pike and perch, which they mostly dump back in the lake or on shore, dead obviously, since it does not sell like walleye. Good thing they have to face a justice circle. Anyone else with one or two over the limit of two fish can lose their boat, truck, and trailer.

Estimated 19,760 walleye caught during moratorium http://www.nugget.ca/2015/07/27/estimated-19760-walleye-caught-during-moratorium

Nipissing First Nation estimates about 19,760 walleye were harvested throughout the 16 day spring moratorium, according to a Commercial Fisheries Harvest Report
posted on Nipissing First Nation website. According to the report dated May 2015, observations were made by three NFN employees, Clayton Goulais, Jeff McLeod and
Clint Couchie, who monitored the activity and frequency of commercial fishermen seen netting during the moratorium. The report states, a total of 13 people went fishing 19 times over an eight-day period.

“Based on previous estimated number of walleye caught during the moratorium we (NFN) have determined that an average of 40 walleye are caught per five panels
of nets,” according to the report. “The average weight from last season's fishing season was applied. It's estimated 9,880 walleye or 5,700 kilograms were harvested
during the moratorium in eight days. By doubling these numbers we can arrive at an estimated forecast for the remainder of the harvest until May 16 - when the moratorium is over.”

The report also warns that the estimate could actually be higher.

“This estimate could reach as high as 21,300 walleye or 12,250 kg if non-compliant fishermen used more nets, as well, two of the groups observed fishing could be using more than five panels per person as observed.”
The report also included a forecasted harvest for May and June. “It's been determined that 30,000 kilograms is the targeted harvest level for both recreational and commercial fisheries for 2015. The breakdown includes - moratorium fishing 11,400 kg, commercial fishing open season 10,300 kg, recreational ice fishing 5,000 kg and recreational open water fishing 5,000 kg.”

Nipissing First Nation announced in June that those First Nation fishermen who didn't comply with this year's moratorium will face a penalty decided by the aboriginal justice circle.
Penalties could include a variety of options such as no fishing for a period of time or community service.

Charges laid in gill netting http://www.nugget.ca/2015/03/26/charges-laid-in-gill-netting

The Ministry of Natural Resources has confirmed charges have been laid in relation to the unmarked gill nets found in Lake Nipissing last summer.
“I can confirm that on March 24, 2015 charges were laid in relation to the unmarked gill nets,” Jolanta Kowalski, Senior Media Relations Officer
with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry told The Nugget Thursday afternoon. She said the suspect was charged with wasting flesh of
fish suitable for food (an offence under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997) and for leaving decaying fish in a net (an offence under the Federal Fisheries Act).

“We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of the Nipissing First Nation in this matter. Since this matter is now before the courts, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.”

Kowalski refused to identify the suspect and didn't provide an explanation.

From June 7 to late August the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry officers pulled 13 abandoned nets from Lake Nipissing. Most of the nets contained hundreds of dead fish.

The first net was discovered on Lake Nipissing on June 7. The net had more than 200 rotting fish in it.
As the nets continued to be found in Lake Nipissing, community organizations and groups jumped on board to help and bring attention to the issue.

BAYSAR Search and Rescue joined forces with the MNRF in the summer to help look for abandoned gill nets. The volunteer organization took five flights over the lake.

The North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce and Lake Nipissing Stakeholders Association called for the arrest of person or persons responsible for gill nets after discovery of a fifth 200-foot net full of rotting fish floating in Lake Nipissing.

Court date set over decaying fish http://www.nugget.ca/2015/07/23/court-date-approaching-for-two-charged-by-mnrf

Rachael Couchie and Kyle Goulais are scheduled to appear in court August 11 to answer to charges laid by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The charges are in relation to unmarked gill nets found in Lake Nipissing.
According to Ontario Court of Justice documents, Couchie was charged with leaving decaying fish (in a net), an offence under the Federal Fisheries Act.
Goulais faces charges under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, as well as leaving decaying fish.

^ don't know much about cedar wood and areas with 90% humidity eh?

The ecosystem did not just magically provide food; from clam gardens to stream management the area had some of the most intensive ecosystem modification of anywhere in North America. Archaeologists like to say; Europeans domesticate plants and animals Indigenous Americans domesticated ecosystems.

I have to SMH at the last part; the real Republicans fought tooth and nail until very recently and some are still going.

I bet if you were a residential school survivor, who could not own the deed to his own house, and lived somewhere with no potable water you wouldn't be too excited about your "special privileges"...

Only what I learned in 8 years of living, hunting, fishing and camping on Vancouver Island. Never had too much of a problem finding wood to burn, and smoke inhalation kills fairly well then, as now.

Geez man. Residential school survivor? Yeah, it was called boarding school. It takes a special kind of wanna-be victim, to continue to blame events from the past, for current misbehavior. There are people out there two and three generations removed from having attended a residential school, that are still hiding behind that excuse. Gladue didn't do the Indians any favors either. Funny too, how the folks that said they were glad to have had the education, which gave them an opportunity to become more than just another uneducated laborer, didn't get near the news coverage at the time it was topical.

How's this for an answer WRT the house? I wasn't Given one. Were I to have been given one, deed or not, and the water wasn't potable, like as not I would get off my arse and either find myself a new place to live, or work at providing myself with a decent source of clean drinking water. But since I have never been offered a house, nor am I likely to be, that will have to remain as conjecture. And yeah, I had to move away from MY traditional home, in order to get a job that paid me well enough that I could afford to buy my own home.

Cheers
Trev

A lot of the non natives on the charrlottes feel they don't live in Canada. The Haida couldn't care for canada but tolerate it for the funding.

In order to separate we have to do it legally
We want are fishing grounds as well as Haida Gwaii
We are separating and wen we take Control of all are resources both land and water so that any Haida Gwaii Citizen Will have real opportunity (wen I said Haida Gwaii citizen I talking both Haida and non Haida )
We like are Neighbors it Canada we have the problem with

And there it is, the residential school card. The new root of all problems.

It's pretty easy to own a house. Buy one like everyone else, they're for sale across Canada.

On reserves don't qualify for provincial first time home grain
This is why thers a on reserve housing grant and you may not realize how feew houses are built each year and the Gratt is not big enough to build a house so thay have to take out a loan just like you
I have yet to see that free house you experts keep talking about nor have I seen that new pickup I keep hearing about
We do get medical but it is the bare minimum I use my Union medical wich is 100% better

I feel like you guys are being dooped. This most likely had a political agenda over an enviromental issue. Need the chief gone? Dont run against him, get him banned.

I was pipeline till I got laid off now I'm doing construction A lot of assumptions are being made to don right lying
Lotta remote communities Hunting is a necessity not the sport hunting
It don't matter what fish and wildlife did people in the north will still have to hunt many can't afford tags and Licensing
Just like you guys wear just getting by wear not rich and we work

The reason I posted this new thread was to point out that progress has been made, the juvenile attitude that 'just because we can' excuse is not being accepted by ALL FN.

I am well aware of examples of waste and disrespect of fish and game by some members of FN,but to suggest this is indicative of ALL people of FN ancestry is also wrong....( waste and disrespect of fish and game is hardly limited to FN either, there are plenty of examples of that in the resource industry)
But if this just becomes a pulpet for finger pointing, nothing will change...I am saying change IS coming but it will ONLY come with people on ALL sides putting aside their diference and preoccupation with old wrongs and moving forward, and that only comes with communication.

For the record,My ancestors also were living peacefully in their villages, minding their own business ,raising their families but also had their land invaded, their women raped ,ther goods plundered ,their towns burned ,their language and religeon taken away and a new conquering people moved in and took whatever they wanted without compensation..but in time were assimilated and became one people.I'm not saying it's 'right'but it's the way it 'is'.FN history is no diferent, even between their own bands, they invaded, took slaves ,raped and pillaged ,they had some pretty barbaric practices,as any cultures history proves. You only held what you could defend.Probably the biggest single debilitating factor was the introduction of alcohol(which still plagues them, particularly through FASD),followed by European diseases( up to 90% of the coastal FN were wiped out around 1900) Nobodys history is pretty, but we don't have to repeat it ,although sometimes I wonder..

you have my respect because you work and travel to work at that but what is your problem with Canada. It seems to me that everything you ask for is given to you my our very liberal courts. Bagfuls of money is on the way courtesy of trudeau. I fail to see what you as a people are lacking. Your customs and such are guaranteed by our glorious Charter as well.

You guy sheer makes me proud to be NOT CANADIAN

For a guy with a wallet full of bills that say "Canada" on them, you talk a good line.

Good luck with that. I look forward to reading all about the complaints from your folks when they get stuck paying their own bills for infrastructure. It does not scale well, and smaller means higher costs. Remote Island life also means the same, but I am sure you are fairly familiar with that. Your taxes will be silly high. Well, if you want roads, electricity, hospitals etc. Or did you think you could have that funded by Canada, while you are independent?

Like the Quebequois separatists, you can be one or the other, but you cannot have your hands in someone else's pockets, while claiming to be independent.

Now, I truly think there are some smarter, farther ahead looking folks around that are going to decide that being part of Canada has too many advantages to leave. Guess what, you are going to be part of this Country for about ever.

Enjoy!

History recounts:

-Independent Ireland=Poor and destitute for decades and under the draconian pull of the Catholic church. Abortion is still illegal there in 2016.
-Rhodesia/Zimbabwe=An international joke except for those poor sods living there. Inflation is record high there. Continues still to this day.
-Haiti=The first slave nation to free itself by violence. But who wants to live there?
-Quebec=How come after at least two federally sponsored never-endums, they have still not left us??

I originally intended not to post anything on this topic till you guys made it a racist free fore all and
When you say assimilation means turning into a racist why would we want do that
I can't see why any FN would ever be in the same room let alone talk with sum of you

To the CGN that are civil and respectful and don't get in on Racial stereotyping I am sorry I did get Carried away
It hard to sit back witnes such outlandish lies being told over and over one post after a noter and not say sumthing

I tired my feet are sore from standing on concrete all day in the sun
my ears are ringing from drill holes in concrete all day
I'm to Busy working right now and would rather spend my Little bit of free time read about guys on CGN hunting trips
Or a new Hunter getting ready to go on his first hunt it is way more interesting then politics

I have heard more racial slurs come from you about Canada than anything else in this thread. One thing we can agree on though, there is much more interesting things to read about.

We all get it, you have a job. So do most of us, it's not something people typically brag about on forums. What I'm getting at is that I do not like being called racist for having an opinion that the chiefs punishment is unjust. I feel the racism card is thrown around all too often these days, it's a down right crock that if someone with a different opinion on a matter involving separate ethnic backgrounds is called a racist if he or she is white. I see others pretty much kissing your a$$ on this thread in fear of being pegged "racist" and you still spit in their face. Have a good day at work sir.

Faced with some honest truths, someone gets very emotional for not very good reasons and then lashes out with his own poorly spelled insults IMO.

I'm thinking that Carverk would have a totally different opinion if he needed a passport to go to work on a daily basis.
