Gen 3 due to the fact i can swap the slide out, and put on a AA 22 conversion for the kid. I dont think Gen 4 has that capability.

They have Gen 4 compatible AA .22 kits now.

My vote is for the Gen 3 but it's biased decision since I own a Gen 3 and have only fondled a Gen 4.

I'm biased as well, but having never fondled any of the Gen4's - are they really that much of a night-and-day improvement over the Gen3's?

The Gen 4s are pretty nice, time will tell if I'm willing to pay the money for a new Gen 4, or hunt down an older one on the EE.

Comparison

Well, I'm honestly not sure if I should stick with my Gen3, upgrade to a Gen4 or seek out an elusive Gen3.5...

Jay,
I got both Gen3.5 and Gen4, besides the cosmetic changes, performance is equal. Fired about 600 rounds on both platform, really no big difference.
Cheers,
G

I have to say Gen 4 - I've had Gen 1 and Gen2's and the grip size (2x4) and trigger reach sucked (also had the trigger return spring fail on the Gen 1, back when people asked you what a Glock was when you said you needed parts for one). I don't own a Gen 4 YET, but I've handled one enough to know that I want one.

I can't really say it's much of a night-and-day improvement over the Gen 3 but again, my limited exposure was merely fondling my friend's Gen 4 and even then it had a custom stipple job.

I can't believe there's a huge difference though since most reports say Gen 4's shoot more or less the same as other gen Glocks but has a more aggressive grip texture and interchangeable back straps.

My idea of the perfect Glock would be a Gen 3 Model 17 which a chopped down G19 grip, shaved off finger grooves ala Gen 2, and light uniform grip stippling. Let's call it a Gen 3 custom. Now if only some brave Canadian soul with an eye and hand for perfection would start a polymer gun chop and stipple shop, I'd be glad to throw my money at them.

At this time my preference is for the Gen 3. I think the Gen 4 will be an improvement WHEN they can build it so that it will consistently run right after 10 or 20 thousand rounds.
I see a lot of people saying things like, "I have 500 rounds through mine and it's flawless".

That is the equivalent of saying, "I let my Taurus idle in the driveway until it warmed up and nothing broke...GREAT CAR!"

I don't care if it will get through 500 rounds of ammo. I care if it will get through 500 POUNDS of ammo.

I could build a Dlask 394 for you that would run for 500 rounds...500 rounds is nothing. If it can't get through 500 rounds it's not a gun, it's a grenade.

So the Gen 4 will be an improvement, but not until they have definitely fixed the bugs. It looks like the bugs are getting massaged out, but I would give them another 6-12 months of consistent reports before I would seriously think about crowning the Gen 4 the new king of Glock.

I've customized my Gen3 G19 to the point where it's considered "FrankenGlocked". Doesn't even shoot like a Glock anymore, either... I couldn't be bothered to stipple so I went with the texturized rubber grip pads instead.

You do that, while me and countless others enjoy flawless performance of our gen4 Glocks. :)

That sir is fightin words! Lol pistols at dawn the only difference is my beretta will work :p lol

Yeah but them tiny 9mm rounds don't have near the knock down power of my .45!

And my 1911 has never let me down, not sure where this stereotype is coming from.

I hope that you do get flawless performance. However it is pointless to pretend that the Gen 4 has not had issues, so if yours is flawless for, say, 25000 rounds or so, you're one of the luckier ones.

If there were not early adopters, though, there would be no one to work out the bugs on, so I definitely appreciate all the people who buy early.

I am just not going to do that myself. And seeing as my Gen 3s work fine, I'm not in any hurry.

You don't need to shoot 25K to see if the gun is reliable. If a gun has reliability issues usually you'll know in the first couple hundred rounds. Now as for durability; they did not change the gen4 enough to doubt how durable it will be.
