Hey there,

I'm looking at building a new hunting rifle set up, and want to see how light of a mountain gun I get set up.
I usually do long distance backpacking hunts, where I get pretty weight concious.

Any recommendations out there for rifles and scopes?
Light, but functional and durable.

Elk would be my bread and butter, but possibly Moose or sheep in the future.

Cheers,

Some good looking light factory rifles these days. Buddy is eyeing up the Weatherby mark V backcountry 2.0 in 280 Ackley improved. Lots of options for good scopes, just watch the weight differences.

Kimber Montana with talley light weight rings and a leupold ultralight scope or vx3i 2.5-8x36.

The new Montana's come with an aluminum trigger guard or if you buy an older one swap it out for one. Titanium bolt handle is also a few ounces off.

How about a weatherby MK V bacountry titainium in 6.5 rpm or 280 AI? In a custom build try a defiance anti-x action, a number 2 contour barrel and a manners stock and any caliber you can dream up.

I would probably go this route, the carbon fiber barreled rifles on the 6-lug action are 5.3 pounds and still manage a 24" barrel with a brake. Pairing it with a one-inch tube scope and Talleys and it'll weight maybe 6.5 all-up.

You didn’t put a budget or guideline so I’ll say for Light Mountain Rifles your not going to beat a Fierce and if you really have a budget a Fierce package from precision optics can’t be beat. Many are tested, shot and predialed in for long range work.

A T3 in Wildcat stock with a couple upgrades would get you there.

I'm currently getting a stainless SPS 700 in 30-06 attached to a Brown Precision stock. It will be much lighter and very practical w/o costing me a bunch.

The sky is the limit as far as budget with UL rifles or builds. Need to have a budget in mind, then go from there.

A M700 Mountain or Tikka T3x, in a Wildcat stock, are fairly affordable ways into lightweight. Savage has a LW model now too, as long as you can hunt effectively with a paperbag over your head... If your budget is limitless, I'd do a build on a Defiance AnTi or Lonepeak actions.

Ultra light rifles are hard to shoot consistently.Every one has there weight threshold .Carbon fiber barrels are not the lightest barrel options .If you want light use a #1 contour or a fluted #2 .

indeed i ve seen guys at the local range not able to sight in the brand new ultralight rig in 308 ...

I just checked. My ruger American predator is allegedly 6.2lbs. Throw a nice lil 32mm scope in there and you can stay under 7lb while shooting sub MOA with out even breaking a grand.

How much ammo do you bring with you? Water bottle or filter? How large is your pack? The rifle may seem like an obvious place to shed weight but are you this disciplined with everything else you bring with you?

This is also true, the same Backcountry rifle with a steel barrel is only 4.9 pounds in .280 AI. I simply have a weakness for carbon fiber :)
