Ultra Light Hunting Rifle Set Up??

Plus you can still live the “mountain hunting” life with XXL kuiu and a 6 lb gun!

xxl is not always related to belly size .... what about shoulders ... what about the lenght of the torso ... i do not own a 6lbs gun my shoes are 13 to 14 great in the snow if you want to hear it lol ...

and you re right it is hilarious at this time of the year to see all the kuiu wearers in town ....

Size 14 you must be the missing link between man and Sasquatch. I bet that tikka feels like a BB gun!

Me, I’m more built like a 12 year old girl. That’s why I need these lady kimbers eh buckmastr!

SO EJG what would be your suggestion for a BUILD including a scope for a LIGHTWEIGHT hunting rig ? RJ

I have built or put together several rifles trying to find the right balance between weight and performance. One that is getting very close is built on a Remmy 700 action, Triggertech Primary, Atlasworx aics mag system, Experimental stock that weighs 28oz, standard would be 33oz, Hardy carbon 20" barrel in 6.5CM which is ok for our small Sika deer, Spuhr one piece hunting mounts on a Spuhr 20MOA Rail, PMII 3-20x50 Ultra Short. I just love that ffp scope even though it is heavy.

I recently met S&B staff at an Event in France where they showed me their new 3-18x42 scope, although SFP it would make the perfect all-round hunting scope and lighter than my PMII.

Right now I am putting together a 243 rem 700 sporter 22" in a carbon monte carlo type stock 21 oz that will possibly have my 6.5-20x50 Zeiss Conquest on top. Not super light light but fast handling and ok for fox to small deer.
In my case I want to be able to shoot foxes to at least 500m, deer say max 600m but also be able to take a Sika stag that is running in to a call at 5m in heavy cover.

Warne also makes a dovetail-mounted scope ring for Tikka rifles that feature a recoil pin in their Maxima line (steel). 5.6oz total weight though, which is about as much as a set of MDT rings and pic rail.

If you can find a kimber preferably a Montana mount a vx3i 2.5-8 or a z3. If no chance of finding a kimber then look for a t3 superlight with the same scope choices. That should get you good and accurate within 350 yards, if the game is farther then hike or have patience to try the next day. Wildcat stocks makes a nice stock for the t3 if you can't stand the Tupperware. Kimbers kevlar composite stock is plenty strong, I watched my 338 bounce down a steep section of creek on a spring bear hunt and it got scratched up in its 15 or so feet of travel. My Leopold scope got scratched terribly and the front aluminum flip cap broke. It never lost zero.

I just checked. My ruger American predator is allegedly 6.2lbs. Throw a nice lil 32mm scope in there and you can stay under 7lb while shooting sub MOA with out even breaking a grand.

How much ammo do you bring with you? Water bottle or filter? How large is your pack? The rifle may seem like an obvious place to shed weight but are you this disciplined with everything else you bring with you?

The most obvious place to shed weight is off your backside. Suppose if your a tradesman or work a physical job it's not necessary. Many show up with the best ultralight gear money can buy, body by Duncan donuts. Burn some shoe leather, up and down trails, put some weight in a old pack.

Since covid I'm down almost 50lbs. Couldn't stand lockdown, so started building.

Excellent advice. Congrats on the weight loss!

Hey there,

I'm looking at building a new hunting rifle set up, and want to see how light of a mountain gun I get set up.
I usually do long distance backpacking hunts, where I get pretty weight concious.

Any recommendations out there for rifles and scopes?
Light, but functional and durable.

Elk would be my bread and butter, but possibly Moose or sheep in the future.

Cheers,

Kimber,,,.......................

I agree, I’m 6’2” not really overwait( ok I could loose 15lbs lol) 240lbs size XXL gloves and mitts, size 14 shoes…. Nearly 7’ wing span…. Anyway, I don’t own any 6lbs rifles!

Weight is weight.. if you can't pack.. good luck with your meat feet on the way out..
Kimber M.A. 280 ai #1 choice or titka is very nice also. Buddies 7mm R.M. smacks clay pigeons out to 650 Y. Tupaware stock!

More legs , are better then less gun... 10 years with my mountain ascent, its tuff enough. And easy to carry.
Have fun in the steep.and deep!!!!!!

My choice would be a model 7 in a .308. I pack this around moose and elk hunting and if you are shooting within hunting ranges <300 yards the 308 will kill elk, moose and sheep. I am partial to the model seven though, I just find they carry nice and you can customize them fairly easy, tikka's as well. Mine wears a 2.5-8x36 VX3, I have never weighed it but it is a pleasure to pack around calling moose in the foothills.
