Ultra short hunting rifle for medium games

It wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong. :)

I just have a thing against really short rifles and shotguns. I've never had a good experience with either.

short & Light rem Model 7

Picked up a nice conditioned Model 7 18.5 barrel in .308 win used on EE boards , put it in a Banser composite stock, painted it Burgany bedded it and added a 1.5 to 6x Leupold.
just over 6 lbs all in, nice gun to handle, made a load with 168gr Bergers & Varget shoots great.

If I wasn't into T/C Contender carbines I would have a stainless model 7 in 7mm-08 or 7MMSAUM.

I'd mod it out with a light weight McMillan style stock and mount a Leupold VX3 2.5-8X36mm Boone & Crockett reticle.

Another vote for the Mossberg MVP Patrol in .308. Mine is on its way and am looking forward to its arrival. Short but not too short and uses the same mags as my M14/M305. My second or perhaps my first choice, if not for the m14 mag use, would have been the Tikka Battue Lite in 308. Love the look of that rifle.

You better try it, "before" you recommended it... the one I had was a piece of crap... I sold it at a discount and with full disclosure.

hoyt, now you got me worried. The rifle is on its way to me now. what kind of issues did you have with it? I did some research and found some comments about "loose fitting" bolts but nothing about serious issues. care to share? might need to cancel the order and go with the battue lite at a higher price point.

The one I played with shaved brass off necks and rims and had the most horrible bolt wobble imaginable. The mag would drop out every second or third shot. I didn't own it a buddy brought it over to see if I could sight it in. If my shotgun patterned as wide I would have scrapped it. It showed a liking to light bullets. I never found a load that it liked and he didn't want to use lighter bullets and traded it away with a warning
I love mossberg. I won't own their center fire rifles. Best of luck

If the shortest possible length is the goal, our minimum legal OAL of 26", can be achieved with a bullpup design. This provides a magazine fed repeater that despite it's short length still has a reasonable barrel length. It seems to me there are some Euro custom rifles configured like this.

While it is short I have to say that bullpup does absolutely nothing for me.

Would like to give it a try though.

very short OAL while remains full lenght barrle(24~26 inch); I think it is a better ideal than those short ones with 16 inch barrels...

I'm thinking of how it feels to hold ie the Keltec RFB semiauto bullpup feels weird to me took a bit of getting used to to shoot one accurately really didn't like it other than how short they are.

Also the scope looks like it is mounted very high = is it comfortable easy to hold steady.

I also sold mine shortly after it arrived, fom the get go I was dissapointed with the quality. Not what I was expecting for the price point.

I received my MVP Patrol .308 last week and took it to the range for some testing. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the rifle. I was looking for a short .308 that pointed quickly and fairly accurate.
The bolt is fairly rough and has a lot of play but I wasn't trying to do quick mag dumps downrange. Is it acceptable at this price point? I'd rather it wasn't the case but not serious enough of an issue for me to sell it.

The stock feels like a synthetic stock but some have said it was wood covered with a spray on sythetic coating. I'll be taking the stock off this weekend so will verify then.

Initial testing was 1.5 moa off the elbows on the bench at 50 yards. I had no issues with mag retention or brass chambering. I reload so that was a concern for me. I fired around 75 rounds and didn't experience a single chambering issue. I used the stock mossberg mag (10 rounds pinned to 5), Magpul p-mag 20 round, pinned to 5 and 10 round XCR mags. All fed reliably. The only thing I corrected was the mossberg mag had a tendancy to stick slightly when charging it. I disassembled and put a coat of dry-lub on the follower. It performs without issue now.

I'm waiting on a 3x9 scope and expect it to shoot a little better once I have that mounted.

The Savage Hog Hunter was a close second for me. The fact that the MVP took AR-10 mags was the key decision factor. If it didn't, I would have probably purchased either the Hog Hunter or the Savage Precision Carbine - PC10.

Thanks for the review on the MVP.

I am considering the new 2015 mossbergs as they will be available with iron sights. Still not sure if they will be able to mirror the quality of used sporters when it comes to an iron sighted hunting rifle.
