What do you use for US cleaner fluid that works but doesn’t dmg aluminum/ finishes etc ? I’ve got one big enough to drop my pistols in . I will be removing the grips
Thankyou

Watch how long you leave it in though.
I’ve had the Dawn/Simple Green etch some finishes and crystallize(?) some alloys if left to long.
Works great though; for me the sweet spot is 50+ degrees C for about 20 minutes, no more than 30.

I know this is a crazy idea but has anyone considered using a purpose designed ultrasonic gun cleaning fluid? 🤷‍♂️

You know a product that is specifically designed to do the job you want it to do?

As for the Purple Simple Green, I find it stains the brass. Can’t say if it does any damage but it looks like the brass was color case hardened. 50 C for 20 minutes for me as well. Extra dirty stuff gets a very small amount of Lemi Shine.

The Simple Green Purple warns not to use at high temps, I think 43C. As a liquid it is a skin irritant and I assume in hot solution the vapour is the concern. I use it in the U/S cleaner but out of caution like to have good ventilation and turn down the heat a bit.

I looked into it.
Reading the download on material compatibility it seems like fairly caustic stuff (the Hornady).
Also the green Simple Green and Dawn is about $10.00 cheaper per tank in my machine, available at any hardware store and non toxic to dispose of (I have no idea on the toxicity of the Lyman or Hornady, they could be great but Simple Green and Dawn actively market how non toxic they are).
For how I use my machine I don’t see an upside to spending more on something I can’t easily find locally.
YMMV.

Yes, Hornady is selling a product marketed for cleaning firearms that will actually damage firearms. Did you even consider just how stupid that notion is?

I have been using the Hornady stuff on gun parts for years now and it has been fine on stainless, parkerized, raw aluminum and anodized aluminum. But then I'm just a rube who doesn't think he is smarter than the experts.

I’d start off with a mild solution. Dish soap with warm tap water.

Some of those cleaners like SG will remove anodizing.

I’ve used Pine Sol on carbs - they came out spotless.

I've always wanted to US clean my revolver cylinders. Gulp... glad I didn't #### around and find out
Use dedicated solution designed for cleaning guns and it'll be fine.

I clean my AR BCG's in ultrasound all the time and they are fine. Also clean my Ruger MK2 in ultrasonic all the time and it hasn't suffered any damage.

I have used water and Simple Green in the past. The only warning I will give you, is that if it's a stainless gun that you are cleaning, it will get REALLY clean and will try to gall. You need to oil it generously after cleaning. I was shocked at how bad the galling was on my S&W 5946 after I cleaned it. A basic light oiling will not work at all.
