HAHA I had to put in that title for a good laugh ... hope you all laughed too?! :p

I'm curious what calibre my fellow CGNer's would use to hunt a Umingmak(muskox)? Please post calibre and or pics of rifle if you wish? Our local HTO had a annual general meeting last nite and the season is open with 29 tags ... I'm going hunting! :D :dancingbanana:

I would use .303British, because it's what I have. I expect you are going to use something you already have, and you have already decided which of the guns you already have.

I don't know very much about these critters. I know they're not that tall, but are incredibly tough. Are they easy to get close to? or are they very skittish and take off running like pronghorn? If they're farily easy to get close to, then I'd probably go with a good .35 cal like 35 whelen or 350 rem mag. If they're skittish, and longer shots are likely, I'd go with a .30 cal magnum of some sort.
But I bet most are taken with the .303 British!

Since my Ruger No.1 in .303 British is next up in my big game queue, I'd guess that would have to be my first choice. :)

I thought you guys used a 223 for everything. ;) I would think a 375Magnum (270gr TSX) would be in order if your 223 doesn't cut it.

What's umingmak like to eat? Average live weight?

.

.338 Federal....of course ;)

SuperCub, it's very very very lean meat. I've had it sliced very thin and small fried up with onions and butter and it was amazing ... I've had it ground up mixed with pork fat and make into burgs which were amazing. Average weight on a full grown bull could reach 1000 pounds.

Good questions. Anything named musk can't be that good? How big are they? How do they act? What do they eat? What can you do with that hairy hide?

There is a nice .358 STA in the EE that would work!

kimberman, they are that GOOD buddy ... ;) They can get quite big, however not every tall. They tend to run when they see you or form a circle around their young. They eat vegetation as they have no top teeth. You can have your hide tanned and use it as bedding or hang it if you wish. ;) I'm going with my M1 Garand 30-06 Old Betty for this trip. :D Cheers,

Kimberman, quick, accept his offer before he changes his mind!

How about a nice Oberndorf Mauser with open sights chambered in 7x57 and loaded with 160gr Partitions or A-Frames?

I had my hide tanned countless times already when I was a kid. For anything but the most minor infractions, it was down with the pants and undershorts and then a good tanning with a section of machinery belting about 3" wide and 1/4" thick.
