but you have to remember that while our rifles are changed up from time to time, the "enemy" ( and i mean all that) get whatever comes to hand, and at irregular intervals-so their "trooper" has no idea how badly his gun is abused, whether it won't blow up in his face , or whatever- you put a maintained gun against one of questionable heritage and the maintained one wins every time- also the training- i should doubt if the "enemy" has any more than pull the trigger training, and how to change mags- much like the kamikaze pilots of ww2- get in , fly, and crash-
well of course, but why would SF units choose the M16 platform over all others???? The M16 has been refined into the worlds best military rifle
We were training Afghan police overseas and there new Yugo AKs jammed more then our C8s ever did. Mostly due to QC and dirty chambers
I love my C8 and would never trade it for an out of date AK
That was often not the case in Vietnam, where the enemy was often just as well trained, led and equipped on the light infantry level.
Also it's not really fair to compare AKs and ammo that are out of date and often worn out to the latest AR systems.
The AK's dependence has become mythical. With today's modern engineering, the Ar platform has been greatly refined. With these new techniques, I have no doubt that a lot of "M-16s" are more reliable than AKs of a shoddy build quality.
IMO, both rifles are great if they are built right. I'd love to own an Arsenal AK.
Back in the day for jungle fighting with both having iron sights. I'd give it to the AK frankly overall.
On the modern battlefield the AR is able to be modified very easily for the job at hand. One other thing not pointed out. The ability to mount various optics. Accuracy and ability to shoot at distance also play a part these days along with reliability etc.
Eotech, Aimpoint, Elcan (Yes I know some aren't so found of them) along with variable scopes are very easy for the modern M4/M16. Not so much for the AK rifles. It's pretty much iron sights or aftermarket stuff to try and add this on. The rifle wasn't designed for this, and hasn't been modernized.

Yugoslav AKs were the worst in the Warsaw Pact AFAIK.
Anyway there will be shortly be a modernized, somewhat more modular AK entering into Russian service, the AK-12, with the '12' standing for 2012.
The two most important appearant changes over the current models are a peep sight situated at the rear of the reciever and a railed top cover. It also has a telescoping folding stock and a different safety layout.
