spent the late morning at the range burning through some old handloads for the 260. Its nice when a gun will digest just about any load and shoot just fine

top right - 142 gr Sierra MatchKing .52" 3 shot, low right - 140 gr Hornady Amax 1.02" 5 shot, center - Barnes 140 gr XLC - .90" 3 shot, bottom right - Barnes 130 grain TSX - 1.2" 4 shot, top left - 129 gr Hornady Interlock - .95" 3 shot

Very nice Mark!! I have a M700 SSDM 30-06 that is like that. It shoots the 150, 165, 180 and 200 Partitions into marvellously small groups. On top of that, The 180 shoots under 1 moa with at least 4 different powders. But it likes to be loaded warm. (not necessarily a bad thing) My 700 Classic in 300 Savage is also very Catholic in it's tastes, with my best 100 meter 3-shot group measuring a dimuitive .040" These are rifles that you DO NOT get rid of....ever!! Regards, Eagleye.

no kidding :D I wish my 30-06 wasnt so fussy. I had some old 165 grain Speer bullets on the shelf so I threw some loads together with Varget and H4895. Gun shot like crap, 2-3" groups. :( Figured maybe something was loose but didnt have any screwdrivers with me but I did have some known-good loads, 168 grain Nosler J4 match over Imr 4831. 3/4" group. Next group was with 165 speers and it went 3 inches.

Tod, Do you not think Varget(AR2208) is too quick for 30-06 with 165 gr projectiles would you not be better served with AR2209.
Regards, J Stuart.

Varget should be fine with bullets 165 grain and lighter. My gun just seems to despise the 165 speer hotcore

Mark; Here's something to try!! I know you probably don't want to accumulate a bunch of different powder numbers, but try Vihtavuori N160 behind those 165 grainers. Never saw an '06 shoot badly with this powder. IMR 4350 usually works well, as does W760. ( It may be that the Speer is not liked by your rifle tho') Regards, Eagleye.

yeah I already loaded up all these Speers I had, so I guess they'll work for offhand practice. 165 grain Partitions also didnt shoot that well, but 165 grain Accubonds do under 1 inch :)

That rifle is clearly not ballistically elitist enough for you. I'll PM you my address and it will be gone from your sight.

IMO Speer's didn't shoot worth a #### either...

For me, 4350 is THE powder for 30-06. 165's or 180's, SGK, NP, NAB, TSX, they all shoot well in my 30-06 with 4350 behind 'em.

I haven't been able to get any really good groups with my .308 and 165gr bullets. I've tried SST, IB's, and TSX, no go with varget. Now all the 180's I've tried have shot moa or under.

I'm thinking that I need a faster powder than varget for the lighter bullets due to the 20" barrel. Anyone have input on that?

my Rem 7 .308 puked out 2-4" groups today with 165gr SPBT's and varget. will go lighter before go heavier I think.

44 - 46gr Varget in .5gr steps. will try 46gr again tomorrow, as there were 2 rounds touching, then one off 2". 165gr Hornady SPBT. would like to try a 150gr IB too....

Nice groups.

.It is a truly accurate rifle.A rifle that shoots a variety of loads, powders, and bullets well is a truly accurate rifle.A rifle that only shoots one load well isn't what I think of as a truly accurate rifle no matter how small the group might be.

I am far more likely to call a hunting rifle "accurate" if it can shoot reasonably well with most reasonable loads, than to deem the same "accurate status on a rifle that makes teeny groups, but only whht select loads.

A truly accurate rifle should do well with any decent load. A rifle that shoots bugholes with only select loads isn't any more accurate than it's ammo..Therefore, not that accurate..

I have only had a few rifles that were not fussy on bullet wieght or powder selection, KEEP IT!
My 30-06 A-bolt was a little Beotch to get the load!

Have had one rifle like that still own it in a 7mm mag it would shoot anything well 110 grs to 175s in a key hole! I kept it!

blargon,

My Browning A Bolt in .308 loves 45.5 of Varget and the 165 grain Nosler Partition...5/8" to 3/4" 3 shot 100 yard groups over and over again.

Jeff.
