here's the story.
owning a larger amount of Unique I decided to try some pistol loads.
first I put 4.8gr in 9mm under a 124gr fmj
this worked out well, with velocity a bit higher than my usual 4.2gr Titegroup.

then I tried it in 357mag
the manual says 7.2 to 7.8gr under 158gr jacketed bullet. My bullets are more like 160gr so I went for 7.5gr. Wow, the velocity was on par with the heavy loads of 16gr W296 but the primers got flattened and cratered. It's the first time I get overpressure signs on book "safe" loads.
I'll try 7gr next time.

And by the way, at these pressures Unique burns way cleaner than W296.

Howdy ;you may want to check alliants powder site for loads . Yours sounds a bit hot ,or at least too hot for the gun you are useing .
A Hot load in my ruger locked up a smith + wesson .start low ,work up slowly.

been there and they list 7.7gr for that bullet which means I should be safe. I double checked the weight with 2 balances. (7.5gr of Unique is about one 1cc scoop)

I do agree it's a hot load but not by the book :(

I made up 500 with 158 gr hard cast GC and 6.5 gr unique and they were between commercial 38 special and 357 ammo. Still very entertaining but not very punishing either.

No signs of pressure and accurate enough I blame me for the groups.

I'm going for 7gr next
and I'm thinking about padding with some Dacron

I am using a Dan Wesson Model 15. 5 is too little.. 6.5 is .. just feeling nice and easy. I'm going to step it up a bit next time. Part of why I go to the range is stress relief and magnums are scientifically proven to reduce non-shooting related stress.
