First off, I know the purists are going to give me #### for this. Yes, this involves chopping part of the rifle off but this is only an idea (so far).

So here's the idea: a 'Tanker' SVT-40.

How will I do it? I think I have an idea...

I'll say that everything from the receiver back will not get touched.
Strip everything down. Cut back the wood fore end to desired length (while keeping it legal for a NR rifle), leaving the end piece with the metal cap for the sling.
Cut the barrel down relative to the length the fore end was cut. Then machine the end for a clean finish.
re-thread for the flash hider, then reinstall everything as it was supposed to fit together.

Again, this might not be so easy since I haven't actually bought the rifle yet and don't know if it can be done. The plan was to buy one just for this project, so any input is appreciated.

Defiantly going to change the harmonics of the whip. Although the new crown would be very nice but the fire ball will be even sweeter.
Please post up pic's when you have done this mod as I was planning on selling mine but after this post I might be changing my mind.

Man, that thing is going to be LOUD! Sounds like a cool idea. Would love to see pics when finished. Probably have to open up the gas a few notches to account for there not being the same amount of time from when the bullet passes the gas hole in the barrel to the time when it exits the barrel and the pressure drops off. There should be enough room to play with on the existing gas system without having to mess with it though.

As far as cost, nothing really. I've got all the tools and machinery needed to do the job...I figure $200 - $250 for a decent SVT (I won't cut up a nice one) and really i'd just shorten the whole thing 4 or 5", so we'll say $300 including ammo by the time i'm done.

Grrrooooaaann... ugh. Not this again. :p

A Soviet tanker would be better off with a Tokarev or a PPSH... if you have to bail from a tank, chances are you're f**cked anyway, unless there's some friendly infantry around. In which case your job is to get to another tank. So I never once "got" the concept of a 'tanker' rifle.

Best of luck, but IMO, the good looks of the SVT are based in it's slender length.

I like the idea of a 'heavy' barrel as well...

2/10

No duracoat.
No adjustable stock.
No laser sight.
No engraved hunting motif.
No grenade launcher.
Too long.
Scope mount isnt welded on or drilled into receiver.
Scope isn't a red dot.
Extended clipazine is too small.

Would not hunt with, shoot, or collect.

This was done maaaaany years ago... Only they chambered them in .303 as it was still during the Cold War and 7.62x54r was a pain to come by... They were called the Globeco Mohawk.

YEP. I have been watching this thread to see how long it would be before someone mentioned the Globeco Mohawk. 15 posts to reinvent the wheel.:D

Ever had a SVT muzzle unit off the barrel? This would be a major rework of the barrel and the and the gas system.
Apart from the Mohawk, it has been done with the rifle retaining a military appearance.

Why not buy an SKS if you want a shorter rifle.

Because then i'd just have an SKS, not a customized SVT I did myself.

Yes, basically i'd be doing this but keeping the full heat shield and flash hider. Interesting video.
